ing whether there is such a-
thing as "Jewish music."
As a composer I have at-
tempted to write "Jewish
music" for the past 40 years,
and I believe there are three
distinctive types.
First, and most impor-
tant, because it is the most
original, is music based on
the traditional chanting of
our prayers. The' chanting
has been transmitted from
generation to generation for
more than 2,000 years.
Many of our tunes were
incorporated into Gregorian
chants due to the fact that
the first Christians were
Jews. who took their pray-

The famous musicologist,
Idelsohn, lists in his books
several Gregorian chants,
which have Latin words. By
substifiaing Hebrew words
for Latin, he shows us that
the Hebrew words fit better
into the rhythmical pat-
terns.
The second type of Jewish
music is based on folklore. I
include here the Hassidic
tunes and the Yiddish
songs. This music origi-
nated in Eastern Europe,
and is not as original as the
music which is based in the
chanting of our prayers.
The "augmented second"
which typifies Eastern Eu-
ropean Jewish music is not
a Jewish trademark. All
nomadic peoples, such as
Romanian and Hungarian
Gypsies, the Spanish Gyp-
sies and the nomadic Arabic
tribes base their tunes on a
scale which contains the

`Israel Is Losing Information
Battle in America to Arabs'

SAN FRANCISCO, (JTA)
— Gen. Aharon Yariv, Is,
rael's former Minister of
Information, said here that
Israel was losing the infor-
mation battle in America
and elsewhere to its Arab
foes.
Speaking bluntly, in an
interview published in the
Jewish Bulletin, the former
Cabinet Minister and for-
mer chief of Israeli Army
Intelligence, -said, "I would
hav'e to say that Israel is
taking the U.S. for granted.
And this includes Jews and
non-Jews. I don't think
many American Jews un-
derstand the situation in
Israel."
He said that "especially in

COJO Combats
Arab Boycotts

NEW YORK (JTA) — The
World Conference of Jewish
Organizations (COJO) will
hold its next meeting during
the summer in Israel
through an invitation from
Premier Yitzhak Rabin.
In another action, COJO
delegates at a New York
meeting voted to authorize
Mrs. Charlotte Jacobson,
chairman, to consult with
the heads of international
Jewish organizations to
coordinate a Jewish re-
sponse to -Arab boycott pres-
sures around the world.

Meanwhile, an article in
the Egyptian newspaper
Al-Aktazadi, spoke of the
execution of the Arab boy-
cott against Israeli firms
and companies dealing
with Israel.

"One of Israel's objectives
in achieving peace is to dom-
inate the Arab region econ-
omically and culturally.
This is not surprising, since
the area constitutes a tre-
mendous financial and pur-
chasing force.
"If we are not on guard,
Israeli merchandise may
penetrate into Arab mar-
kets and the Israeli econ-
omy will develop at the ex-
pense of all the area's
economic growth and at the
expense of Arab money."

times of economic crisis, if
we want important aid we
have to convince public opin-
ion that"' it is justified and
necessary. Not enough of an
effort is being made in re-
spect to dealing with the
public."

Yariv said he would also
do his best "to coordinate
all the Jewish organiza-
tions in the U.S." because
"they can play a very im-
portant role in giving out
information rather than
just receiving it. These
organizations all have
public relations outlets
and they're not being used
effectively right now."

Addressing Jewish lead-
ers at a luncheon of the Jew-
ish United Fund in Chicago
recently, Yariv expressed
the view that "the outlook
for Israel is difficult but not
bleak." He said that "al-
though the Arabs force us to
make economic sacrifices as
well as human sacrifices, I
assure you all that we shall
stay the course."

The third type is the new
Israeli music, also called
Mediterranian music. Al-
though only a little over
half a century old, the Is-
raeli music already shows
certain distinctions and
characteristics so that we
often can recognize a tune
as "Israeli."

This music is a mixture of
Slavic, Yemenite and even
Bedouin Arabic music. The
irregular dance rhythms
show typical Yemenite in-
fluence. It is interesting to
point out that. Israeli tunes
