THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Hawk Missile Sale to Jordan Embarrasses State Dept._ WASHINGTON (JTA) — The State Department ap- peared embarrassed Tues- day by disclosure that the United States has reached a final agreement with Jordan to sell that country the Hawk ground- - to-air missile system. Negotia- tions to provide Israel with the Lance ground=to-air sys- tem were suspended pend- ing the reassessment. The State Department explained later that the agreement to sell the Hawk system to Jordan had been reached "in principle" when Secretary of State Henry Kissinger visited Amman last'November and there- fore was not a commitment. It was also pointed out that Israel is continuing to re- ceive arms supplies con- tracted for earlier, a fact that has been acknowledged by Israeli spokesmen. Officials refused to dis- close how many Hawk bat- teries will be sold to Jor- dan, when they would be delivered and how much they would cost. One esti- mate has placed the cost at $100 million over a period of years. King Hussein of Jordan, meanwhile, is barnstorming the U.S-. on a speaking tour of college campuses. He spoke at Florida State Uni- versity Monday and at the Citadel, the military college of South Carolina Tuesday. His theme is essentially the same at all stops: that Jor- dan, Egypt and Syria are ready to make peace if Is- rael is ready to withdraw from all occupied Arab ter- ritories. and to recognize "the legimate rights of the Palestinian people." Friday, May 9, 1975 19 JDL'ers Kosher Food Request Rejected; Attorney to Appeal NEW YORK (JTA) — Nathan Lewin, the attorney for two Jewish DefenSe League members seeking kosher food during their prison terms for criminal contempt, said he will file an appeal against .a ruling rejecting the kosher-food request. Federal Court Judge Thomas Griesa ruled against the request Monday from Jeffrey Smiloi, and Richard Huss, who were convicted last July after they refused to testify against three other JDL members who were arrested in the January 1972 bomb- ing of the offices of Sol Hu- rok. Smilow and Huss are in - the Federal House of Deten- tion in Manhattan. They have been ordered to serve their one-year terms; which started last month, at the Federal Youth Center iri Ashland, Ky. They had contended they had a constitutional right, under the First Amendment to be served kosher food in the Ashland facility and, that if this was not possible, they be allowed to remain at the Manhattan facility where Israeli Policewoman Attends Bar-Ilan Classes in Uniform frozen kosher prepackaged meals could be brought in. Judge Griesa said .a pris- oner can retain only those constitutional rights "which are not inconsistent with his status as a prisoner and with the legitimate penolog- ical objectiN4s of the correc- tions system." He ruled that the Federal Bureau of Pris- ons was "entirely correct in refusing to purchase special food for one group of prison- ers." Lewin said he would file an appeal in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit here on the constitu-, tional issue. The Griesa ruling may have a bearing on a simi- lar demand by Rabbi Meir Kahane, the JDL founder, who has been held in a one-year term for violation of parole. Under an order from Fed- eral Judge Jack Weinstein, Kahane is permitted to leave the facility daily to ob- tain kosher food and to wor- _ ship. Judge Weinstein has reserved decision on a re- quest by federal attorney's for Kahane's- immediate transfer to a federal prison at Allenwood, Pa., where Kahare- said he could not obtain kosher food. •_ 26001 COOLIDGE HWY 543-334 OAK PARK SALE BY POPULAR DEMAND!
