Supporters of Ousted Rabbi
Entering Toronto Dispute

TORONTO (JTA) — Sup-
porters of Rabbi Stuart Ro-
senberg, the ousted rabbi of
Conservative Beth Tzedec
Synagogue, have filed a
class action in the Ontario
Supreme Court on behalf of
all members of the congre-
gation except nine board
members named as defend-
ants. Rabbi Rosenberg was
ousted from his pulpit in
January, 1973.
The plaintiffs also said
they were seeking an in-
terim injunction to remove
the nine defendants, includ-
ing Dr. Fred Weinberg, con-
gregation president, and
Albert Gellman, board of
governors chairman, from
control of the synagogue's
affairs. The interim injunc-
tion action asks the court to
appoint a receiver and a
manager.
The 23 plaintiffs filed a
detailed statement of claim.
The defendants have en-
tered appearances to indi-
cate they intend to contest
the action but have not yet
filed a detailed statement of
defense.

The court was asked to
find that Rabbi Rosen-
berg's dismissal was in-
valid and that the new
constitution adopted at a
general membership meet-
ing in November, 1973,
also is invalid.

In August, 1973, Rabbi
Rosenberg announced he
was seeking a rabinnical tri-

der his contract. He said he
was also planning a court
action against eight mem-
bers of the synagogue board
for $1.75 million for an al-
leged conspiracy against
him.
Since then the legal situa-
tion has been complicated
by additional suits, counter-
suits and injunctions. Ef-
forts at mediation in the
dispute have failed.
The Joint Placement
Commission of Conservative
Judaism approved unani-
mously in September, 1973,
a recommendation that
Rabbi Rosenberg and the
Beth Tzedec board submit
to binding arbitration on
whether the rabbi was dis-
missed for cause. An arbi-
tration hearing never ma-
terialized.

Israel's Book Fair

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Forty-two countries are rep-
resented in Jerusalem's In-
ternational Book Fair.

Twelve late entries,
mostly from South Amer-
ica, had joined the original
list. The only East Euro-
pean bloc country repre-
sented is Romania.

In all, 60,000 books of 750
local and foreign publishers
are on display at the one-
week fair which opened
Monday and 150 overseas
publishers are expected to
participate in person.
