Adat Shalom UHS Students
Simulate Knesset Elections

Students at the Adat
Shalom Synagogue United
Hebrew School branch cele-
brated Israel Independence
Day April 20 by simulating
elections to the Israeli Knes-
set and then convening a
parliamentary session. The
simulation afforded stu-
dents an opportunity to
learn about the workings
and structure of Israeli poli-
tics.
Election speeches were
heard from six parties rep-
resenting tlye entire spec-
trum of Israeli opinion, and
then the- students voted for
their favorite party. After
the ballots were counted,
students became Knesset
members of the party for
which they voted.
Their first task was to
form a government by
making coalitions between
the parties. In both ses-
sions, the Likud Party re-
ceived a plurality of the
votes and became the dom-

Magazine Has
Poster Contest

NEW YORK — A special
poster contest to celebrate
the holiday of Shavuot has
been announced by Contact
magazine, the Jewish youth
periodical published by the
Board of Jewish Education
of Greater New York and
the Jerusalem. Post.
The entry selected as first
prize winner will be printed
as a poster by the Jewish
National Fund and distrib-
uted internationally for
Shavuot 1976-5736.
The first-prize winner
will receive the JNF Medal
of the Israel Coins and Med-
als Corp. The second prize
winner will receive a beauti-
ful pictorial album of Israel,
and the third prize poster
creator will be awarded a
set of Israeli records.
All entries should be 13.5
x 18.5 inches in size and
use a graphic idea to rep-
resent the holiday as an
agricultural festival. Sub-
missions should be mailed
to the BJE and received no
later than June 1. All en-
tries will be judged by a
panel of artists, educators
and representatives of the
JNF and Contact maga-
zine.

After the government co-
alition was formed, the
Adat Shalom Knesset held
an open debate. Students
had an opportunity to ex-
press opinions and vote on
crucial issues involving the
future of the occupied terri-
tories and the role of reli-
gion in Israel.
The Adat Shalom Knesset
voted down resolutions
which would have recog-
nized the validity of non-
Orthodox conversions per-
formed outside of Israel,
and resolutions which
would have established an
independent Palestinian
state on the West Bank.

Junior YI Teens
to Attend Regional

Junior Young Israel
Teens (grades 6-8) will send
members to a regional con-
vention of the National
Council of Synagogue Youth
(NCSY) to be held today
through Sunday in Cleve-
land.
Participating in the con-
vention will be: Debbie En-
gel, Peggy Sperber, Michael
Eisenberg, Rachel Flatt,
Anita Singal, David Rube,
Daniel Koenigsberg, Uriel
Levy, Helene Goldberg and
Cheryl Servetter.
Halutzim (grades 3-5) will
hold a Shabat meeting 3:30
p.m. May 10 at the home of

be games and refreshments.
