Commonwealth Head Returns From M.E.; Gains Contacts Arthur F.F. Snyder, pres- ident of Bank of the Com- monwealth, recently re- turned from a 20-day tour of the Middle East to cement bank ties with Arab inves- tors. His trip resulted in an arrangement with the Na- tional Bank of Egypt to han- dle letters of credit. Snyder said that Com- monwealth is making a $50,000 profit on the deal, but he wouldn't say which companies were involved or how big were the letters of credit. . During his tour, Snyder said he didn't run into any- one who wanted to argue political matters, such as U.S. support for Israel. He said that no one raised any questions about Commonwealth's two Jewish directors or the fact that Snyder hired the predominantly Jewish law firm of Honigman, Miller, Schwartz and Cohn, to represent the bank. His tour was set up by as- sociates of Ghaith Pharaon, the Saudi Arabian business- man who has bought con- trolling interest in the bank. Snyder's trip was designed to get to know bank officials and other financial powers in Lebanon, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait and Bahrain.
