disputed the view that accel-
erated Arab propaganda ef-
forts on American cam-
puses, financed with petro-
dollars, have heightened
anti-Israel or anti-Jewish
hostility among college stu-
dents and faculty.
Dr. Norman Frimer, na-

Citing an analysis of
field reports from Hillel di-
rectors at 120 major Amer-
ican schools, Dr. Frimer
said that "data based on
day-to-day observation do
not show any significant
shift in campus option
which, by and large, sup-
ports Israel's right to sur-
vival."

Efforts by pro-Arab cam-
pus groups distributing lit-
erature, screening films,
organizing exhibits and con-
vening rallies with speakers
hostile to Israel, "may
create a sense of discomfort
among Jewish students and
others on campus, but the
extent of their productivity
is still minimal," Dr. Frimer
said. The few exceptions, he
added, are "scattered, iso-
lated and, for the moment,
non-theatening."
Major finding of the Hil-
lel analysis, Dr. Frimer

NOW WAITING

TEL AVIV (JTA) —
About 400 policemen re-en-
forced by army units were
deployed around Safed and
nearby Miron in Galilee
Sunday to protect Israelis
coming to celebrate Lag
B'Omer eve at the gravesite
of Rabbi Shimon Bar
Ymchai.
The pilgrimage is mainly
by the Sephardic commu-
nity but many Ashkenazic
religious groups had set up
tent cities where vendors
sold special foods and
drinks.

The proximity of the
area to the Lebanese bor-
der prompted the heavy se-
curity precautions against
possible terrorists assaults
on the throngs of pilgrims.

A warning that terrorist
activities may be resumed
from Jordanian territory as
a result of the recent accord
between Jordan and Syria
was issued by Gen. Raphael
Eytan, commander of the
northern front.

said, was that "the campus
remains de-politicized" and
students are more con-
cerned with the effects of
the faltering economy on
their job potentials after
graduation.

The "single evidence" of
any Arab success is that
"such issues as Palestinian
national self-determination,
the existence of an Arab
Diaspora and the question
of refugee repatriation —
circumstances more au-
thentically identified with
th.e Holocaust which the
Arabs have begun exploiting
for their own self-image —
are now highlighted in Mid-
dle East debates on cam-
pus," the Hillel director
said.

The analysis, prepared
by Rabbi Samuel Z. Fish-
man, Hind's research and
program director, who
conducted the poll of his
colleagues throughout the
country, found "little cor-
relation" between rising
Arab student enrollments
— reported to be up 36 per

cent last year — and anti-
Israel activity on campus.

A number of Hillel direc-
tors reported that the ap-
pearance on their campus of
an Israeli celebrity, such as
Moshe Dayan or Ephraim
Katzir, may evoke some
form of pro-Arab counter-
activity. But these are gen-
erally "one-shot demonstra-
tions" and few of the Arab
political groups on campus
"show any great capacity
for campaigns with-staying
power or sustained action,
Dr. Frimer reported.,
