Sabra Pro Team Was Popular
With Israel's Basketball Fans

By HASKELL COHEN

(Copyright 1975. JTA, Inc.)

TEL AVIV — A terrible
thing happened to the Israel
Sabras basketball team on
its way to the European
Professional Basketball
League championship which
ended its season here on a
sour note.
The Sabras were sched-
uled to play Switzerland in
the final game of the league
schedule. Switzerland re-
fused to come to Israel for
the final game; its manage-
ment claimed that the play-
ers on the team decided that
"Israel was too big a risk at
this time."
Switzerland had by virtue
of a loss two days before
coming to Israel eliminated
itself from capturing the
league season crown. Conse-
quently, the players decided
to skip the game and voted
to go home.

League management
tried to sweeten the pot for
both the Israeli and Swiss
teams (all were American
players) by arranging for
a two out of three series in
Israel with the two teams
to split $8000.

Even this inducement
failed to stir the Swiss Al-
pines who refused to go
through with the series.
There was a tangible reason
for such a series since Israel
had won the regular sea-
son's schedule while Switz-
erland had won a mid-sea-
son league tournament in
which the Sabras, with two
key players out due to inju-
ries, didn't win a game.
It is a shame that the Is-
raelis couldn't see the Sa-
bras against the runner up
team in the finale. As a
show of solidarity, the Sa-
bras, comprised of Ameri-
can players, voted to play an
exhibition game against an
all-Israel five. The best play-
ers in Israel were mustered
and the game took place in
Yad Eliyahu with some
4,000 excited fans present.
The game proved a run-
away for the Sabras who
triumphed over the All-Star
team by some 30 points.
What was not surprising
was that the fans, who by
this time recognized the su-
periority of the type of bas-
ketball played by the pros
over that displayed by the
Israeli five, cheered the Sa-
bras on very vocally.

The climax was reached
with five minutes to go
when Coach Herb Brown
of the Sabras inserted the
team trainer, Wally
Hayes, who immediately
scored a basket for the
Sabras.

When the American
group of players first came
to Israel in December, local
fans really felt, sight un-
seen, that their best clubs
would chew up the Sabras.
They began to change their
minds as the season devel-
oped.
Mid-way through Febru-
ary when the Sabras played
the National team and de-
feated them by 21 points the
local afficianados became
convinced that their boys
still had a long way to go be-
fore they could play up to

the ability of the profession-
als.
Before the team left for
home, several of the boys in-
dicated that they, desired to
be back next year if the Sa-
bras play in the European
League again.

At this point the owners
of the European Profes-
sional Basketball League
franchises are talking
about continuing next
year. Nobody made any
money, but the owners
have been heartened by
the response of the fled-
gling loop and want to con-
tinue.

The future will definitely
be decided within the next
couple of weeks. One thing
is certain, Israeli fans have
become pro oriented quickly
and if the Sabras should
play next year they are cer-
