State University's English
department lecture commit-
tee Thursday. -•
Prof. Howe has published
more than 34 books , on
American fiction, Yiddish
literature, the labor move-
ment and socialism.

While honoring the elder
of the family, Susan Beck,
on her 90th birthday, April
16, at a dinner party at the
Greit Lakes Country Club,
early Detroit history was
recalled by reminiscing rel-
atives and guests.
Mrs. Beck, who was born
in Pittsburgh, has been as,
sociated with Temple Beth
El and its affiliates for more
than 60 years. She was an
associate of the late Mrs.
Truman Newberry in activi-
ties of Detroit's Infant
Guild.
A pioneer associate of the
Jewish Woman's Club,
which later became the
Council of Jewish Women,
Mrs. Beck played a role also
in the Beth El Sisterhood
and the other women's
groups.
Mrs. Beck, widow of
Louis Beck, is the former
Susan Garvett. She is a sis-
ter of Joseph Garvett of
Miami, Fla., and Mrs. Sol Q.
(Tillie Garvett) of Petal-
uma, Calif.; mother of the
late Irene Burns and of Her-
ald Beck of Fresno, Calif.;
grandmother of Philip
Burns and Debby Beck.

Garvetts — the late Morris
Garvett, one of Detroit's
most prominent attorneys,
was a brother of Mrs. Beck
— and the Mazers, uncles of
the Garvetts. •
Ira Sonnenblick, execu-
tive director of the Jewish
Home for the Aged, in
whose Borman Hall Mrs.
Beck is now a resident,
joined-in paying honor to
Mrs. Beck in one of the after
dinner speeches at the testi-
monial.

Registration for the 1975
Jewish Community Center
Summer Program still is
open. A division of the sum-
mer program is Camp
Shalom. Designed for 4-6th
grade boys and girls, Camp
Shalom is a camp program
with a Hebrew flair.
Activities include swim-
ming, sports, crafts and
dramatics, plus the use of
conversational Hebrew.
Other Summer Program
activities are available for
youngsters, beginning at
age 21-months and extend-
ing through high school.

Social Club Plans
Memorial Service

The United Jewish Social
Club will have its annual
Yizkor service to honor the
memory of the six million
who perished in the Holo-
caust 10:30 a.m. Sunday at
the Lubavitcher Center,
14000 W. Nine Mile, Oak
Park.
The club is comprised of
Hungarian, Czechoslova-
kian and Romanian survi-
vors of the Holocaust.
Rabbi Solomon Poupko
will deliver the memorial
address and Cantor Hyman
Adler will chant the memo-
rial prayers. The commu-
nity is invited.
