Canal Reopening Causes Concern;
Pretext for Action Against Israel?

TEL AVIV, (JTA) —.Is-
rael political and military
circles are taking a serious
view of the possibility that
Egypt may use the reopen-
ing of the Suez Canal on
June 5 as a pretext for mili-
tary action in Sinai aimed at.
driving Israeli forces beyond
artillery range of the water-
way. •
Arab military commenta-
tors have predicted that
President Anwar Sadat
may send as many as five di-
visions across the_canal be-
fore it is officially reopened
to commercial shipping.
Sadat would attempt to
justify his move by the need
to protect ships using the
canal froth possible Israeli
attack.

per Al Ciad, said recently
that Egypt's economic
plans for the Suez Canal
zone would be endangered
as long as Israeli forces re-
main in the Gidi and .Mitle
Passes that are within ar-
tillery range of the canal;
therefore, it is logical to
assume that the Egyptians
will open military action
to push the Israelis from
the passes, Abdallah
wrote.

Israeli military sources
say thatthe Egyptians have
the ability to move large
military forces across the
canal in a matter of hours
without seriously interrupt-
ing maritime traffic.

JDC-Leader Sees
Fear in Argentina

BUENOS AIRES- (JTA)
— Jack D. Weiler,,chairman
of the Joint Distribution
Committee, said he sensed a
greater apprehension
among Jewish leaders here
over the general political sit-
uation than was- evident in
former years.
Weiler, who is on an in-
spection tour of JDC facili--
ties in .Latin America, - ac-
companied by JDC executive
vice-chairman Samuel L.
Haber, visited Santiago,
Chile, Buenos Aires, -Argen-
tina and Montevideo, Uru-
guay.
Weiler said that the com-
munity institutions which
are led mostly by volun-
teers, are in great heed of
professional help. He said
the JDC has offered scholar-
chips for Argentine Jews to
train in the U.S. on condi-
tion that they return here to
work for Jewish institu-
tions.
