; ; ly f • THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Strife in Lebanon JERUSALEM (JTA) — Despite the casualty figures (over 100 terrorist dead), last week's strife in Beirut between the Palestinian ter- rorists and the Christian Phalangist Party militia is seen by observers here as a success for the terrorists. In four days of fighting, the Palestinians showed once more that they can take up arms brazenly and publicly in the heart of the capital without the Le- banese army daring to chal- lenge them. OAK PARK They showed, too, that without employing by any means all the forces avail- able to them, they can launch swift and accurate attacks on selected targets — such as the pharmacy store of Phalangist leader Pierre Jumeil or the homes of his lieutenants. Moreover, last week's violence showed that the Palestinian organizations can look to broad sections of the Moslem leadership in Lebanon for sympathy and support, while the Phalangists plainly found it hard to drum up enthu- siasm among other Chris- tian parties. 543 3343 SUNDAY 12 TO 5 for the living decor in your home... The U.S. is committed to the survival of Israel as a demo- cratic state. "This is a policy unrelated to our long discredited at- tempt to shore up our "ally" in southeast Asia. The two problems are different and must be handled differ- ently. Linking them is a pol- itical trick which is unwor- thy of a diplomat of Mr. Kissinger's wisdom and stature!'
