Members of the Japanese Makuya sect, a group
known for its solidarity with Israel and the Jewish peo-
ple have recently requested the Jewish National Fund's
permission to plant cherry trees in memory of their spir-
itual leader, Prof. Ikuro Teshima. The group ended their
11th annual pilgrimage to Israel by singing and dancing
in the streets of Jerusalem, and had pedestrians join
them.

Israeli Basketball Team
Named European Champ

By HASKELL COHEN
(Copyright 1975, JTA, Inc.)

TEL AVIV — After many
years of frustration, Israel
finally has- produced a
champion in international
competition. The Sabras
basketball team, comprised
soley of Americans, most of
whom are non-Jewish, who
are led by Jewish coach
Herb Brown, this month
was declared the winner of
the European Professional
Basketball League, by vir-
tue of the fact that the club
had moved from last place
to the front in two months.
The youngest team in the
five-country loop got off to a
poor start mainly, because
the early games were played
on the road. In addition,
Coach Brown, fresh out of
the college ranks, insisted
on playing a pattern-style of
basketball with little allow-
ance for free-lance perform-
ance. It took the players
some time to adapt to his
sytem but once they did,
they moved through the op-
position at a rapid pace.
Despite the fact that all of
the players are not Jewish,
they have been very well
received by the Israeli pub-
lic and what is even more
gratifying is that the play-
ers on the team have found
Israel to be an exciting
country. As many as five of
the Sabras will be given
trials by clubs in both the

NBA and the ABA. Four
other starters definitely are
slated to receive trials next
fall with teams in both the
U.S. major leagues.
The only sad note con-
cerning the closing of the
pennant race. was that the
Swiss team made up of
American players refused to
come to Israel for the final
game of the season. The day
before their scheduled ap-
pearance against the Sabras
the general manager sent a
wire here advising the Sabra
management that the play-
ers in Deneva had voted that
it was too much of a secu-
rity risk to come for the
final game.
