RCA Chairman Is Son
of Advocate of 'Wireless'
By DAVID SCHWARTZ
(Copyright7975, JTA, Inc.)
Robert W. Sarnoff, chair-
man of the Radio Corp. of
America, is the source of
some interesting news.
RCA, we are told, has per-
fected a little device called
the microprocessor which
offers the prospect of a 40
percent boost in the gasoline
mileage of cars. There could
be an annual savings as a re-
sult of more than 500 mil-
lion gallons of gasoline,
equivalent to 27 million bar-
rels of oil. The device works
by a computerized process
which results in the more
complete usage of the oil.
The microprocessor,
while at present designed
only for cars, we are told,
can also be used in the heat-
ing of homes and will save
fuel there also.
The amount of the saving,
to be sure, it not big enough
to solve the oil problem but
the invention should make
the Arabs a little less cocky
about their oil monomply.
of a synagogue on the holi-
days.
About this time, Marconi
introduced the wireless and-
the elder Sarnoff decided to
learn wireless telegraphy.
Then one day in 1912, the
whole country heard about
him. He was the wireless
operator who picked up the
news of the sinking of the
Titanic. For three days the
country was absorbed in the
story of that episode.
Maybe this encouraged
Sarnoff to express some
ideas he had about the
development of the wire-
less. Anyway, it . was
shortly after this that he
proposed to the Marconi
Co. that the wireless might
be used for broadcasting.
He outlined what he called
"a music box with but-
tons" but there was no
response.
Maybe these are the
days of Messiah. The rab-
bis said when the Messiah
comes one grape will pro-
duce 150 gallons of wine.
Probably they had in mind
some kind of invention like
the microprocessor.
Some 10 years passed and
RCA was organized, taking
over the Marconi Co. and
Sarnoff again proposed the
idea. They finally agreed to
spend $2,000 for an experi-
ment.
How could he make an
effective demonstration?
Sarnoff picked up the paper
and read the headline:
"Jersey City ready for big
championship bout."
Speaking of rabbis, one is
reminded of another — not
a rabbi — but a young fel-
low who was studying to be
a rabbi. Strengely enough
his name was Sarnoff too.
In fact, he was the father of
Robert Sarnoff. His name
was David Sarnoff.
The Sarnoffs lived in
Minsk, Russia, where little
David was studying his Tal-
mud. His mother was very
anxious for him to be a
rabbi. Then the family came
to America. Thei were poor,
of course. Rich people do not
emigrate. So poor that little
David went to work at once.
In fact, David Sarnoff used
to say that two days after
his arrival, he was selling
the Jewish Morning Journal
on the streets of the East
Side. He also earned a little
money singing in the choir
The $2,000 dollars which
Sarnoff had been allowed ,
for experiments was not
very much, but Sarnoff bor-
rowed a naval transmitter.
Some 200,000 amateur wire-
less operators listened in to
this first public broadcast
and after that there was no
need to convince the com-
pany that they had some-
thing.
Jack Dempsey was
going to meet the French-
man, Carpentier in a con-
test for the heavyweight
championship. The Man-
assa Mauler who had
knocked out big Jess Wil-
lard and would now meet a
second contender. Mr 7
over the country wou
interested in that fight.
Now was a wonderful op-
portunity for the wireless
to show its stuff.
