THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 44 Friday, April 18, 1975 Avriel's Fascinating Novel Details 'Illegal' Immigration Ehud Avriel, the Israeli Consul General for the Mid- west who will be the con- cluding speaker for the Is- rael Independence Week events at the Jewish Com- munity Center 7:30 p.m. Sunday, will also be auto- graphing copies of his new book "Open the Gates" at a public reception following his speech. Published by Atheneum, "Open the Gates" details the personal experiences of Avriel during 10 years with the Mossad — the move- ment within the Haganah which funneled thousands of Jews into Israel before, during and after World War II. Avriel cautions the reader UNIQUE LAMP 8 GIFT For Decorator Service 9 Mile & Coolidge Oak Park Center 545-1410 You're invited that "Open the Gates" is not a complete account. It deals with his personal experi- ences from the time of Hit- ler's occupation of Austria in 1938 to the founding of the state of Israel in 1948. Golda Meir, in her pre- face to Avriel's book, ex- plains that "Survival was no longer sufficient as an aim. The struggle now was not for Jewish lives, but for Jewish souls — for the entire personality of the Jewish people in the dec- ades and centuries to come. . . "This is what the story of the Mossad is really about, and this is why it deserves to be told:And Ehud Avriel, who was one of this group, and participated in so many of its actions, can tell the story as one of those who created the Mossad." Avriel writes of the Mos- sad's clandestine operations throughout Europe to smuggle Jews past the Bri- tish and into Palestine. 20% Off •invitations •centerpieces •stationery Phyllis Billes 559-4343 ASOVIDOSIKAIK>3004111k>1110C )211;S:X•k. Avriel expertly weaves the international situation into the exploits of those he was personally in contact with to keep the reader in- formed of the total situation throughout this fast-moving work. "Open the Gates" is a fascinating work that gives the reader a personal view of one of the most extraordi- nary rescue missions in the history of mankind. Avriel has continued to serve Israel since that time. He became Israel's first full ambassador (to Prague), and headed the prime minister's office under Ben-Gurion, the treasury under Levi Esh- kol and served under Golda Meir when she was foreign minister. He has served as Israeli ambassador to several coun- tries, including Italy. ■ ■ G A record attendance is expected at the ninth an- nual Bnai Brith presidents brunch 10 a.m. Sunday at Cong.
