Torah Study Revival Seen in Israel 'Schools

By ARYEH NEWMAN

There is no doubt that the
sceptical and functional ap-
proach to the sciences which
is characteristic of much
current thinking is helping
to lay the ghost of the theo-
logical and philosophical
dogma which inhabited so
much serious study of To-
rah and made heretics of so
many. Thankfully the ex-
ample of Israel in this re-
spect is literally fulfilling
the prophecy that from Zion
shall go forth the Torah.
The fact that the Bible
was the central literary and
religious text of the school
system in the renascent
Jewish community of Pales-
tine and subsequently the
sovereign state of Igrael set

in motion a new dialogue
with Torah dictated by
purely pedagogic considera-
tions.
For 12 years for one to
two periods daily the Israeli
pupil and teacher grapple
with the Bible. In the gen-
eral school system literary,
historical and national cri-
teria prevail; in the religious
schools these becbme the
"handmaids" of faith, sub-
ordinate to the traditional
commentaries. Common to
both are the insights of Pa-
lestinography and archeol-
ogy and the immediacy of
the physical contact with
the land of the Bible.

In this context must be
placed the contribution of
Israel's foremost Bible
teacher Nehama Leibowitz
whose Bible studies are
incidentally the best-sell-
ing English publication of
the World Zionist Organi-
zation.

Out of her classroom con-
frontations and experi-
ments with all ages and out-
looks she evolved an
approach and teaching tech-
nique which in breadth and
depth catered to the repre-
sentatives of almost every
nuance of the ideological
spectrum.

Nehama Leibowitz ran-
sacked the whole treasury
of Jewish comment down
the ages from the earliest
Midrashim to contemporary
commentators, in the proc-
ess resurrecting from obli-
vion many little known
works which have been re-
printed for the first time for
centuries in response to the
demand set up by her quota-
tions from them.
The purpose was not how-
ever dry-as-dust scholarship
but to provide grist for the
living dialogue between
reader and Torah text. Hith-
erto close reading of the
Bible had been regarded as
the privilege of the revival-
ist, the mystic and funda-
mentalist. Nehama made it
the hallmark of any intelli-
gent and self-respecting Bi-
ble study whatever the pri- .
vate views of the reader of
God and religious practice.

Kosher Food Urged
at Federal Prison

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Rep. Edward I. Koch (D-
N.Y.) has urged that kosher
food be supplied to obser-
vant Jews at the Allenwood
(Pa.) Federal Penitentiary,
the prison where Rabbi
Meir Kahane is scheduled to
serve the rest of a one-year
prison term.
In a letter to Norman
Carlson, director of the Fed-
eral Bureau of, Prisons,
Koch stated that special ar-
rangements were fre-
quently made in the prison
system, as in the case of the
Black Muslim population,
and it would similarly be
reasonable to meet the
needs of the Orthodox Jew-
ish inmate. Some of the
prisons already serve kosher
meals where necessary.
Last week, Kahane had
protested the fact that he
will be unable to observe
kosher dietary laws when he
enters Allenwood Prison
despite an order by Federal
Judge Jack Weinstein.

He said that those in

said - the delay in arms sup-

was a political move.

The American scholar
also said Israelis must not
