UN Looks at M.E. Force
UNITED NATIONS
(JTA) — Secretary General
Kurt Waldheim recom-
mended Monday night that
the Security Council extend
the mandate of United Na-
tions Emergency Force
(UNEF). Waldheim's rec-
ommendation was included
in his report on UNEF, Sub-
mitted to the Security
Council.
The report covers the pe-
riod of Oct. 13, 1974-April
12, 1975. The mandate of
-UNEF expires Thursday.
The Security Council is ex-
pected to meet that day
about the extension.
In his report Waldheim
noted that Egypt ,has indi-
cated that it will not object
to the renewal of the man-
date for an additional period
of three months, while Is-
rael stated that she favors
renewal of the mandate for
a period of no less than six
months "on the grounds
that UNEF is an integral
part of the disengagement
agreement of Jan. 18, 1974."
Waldheim himself did
not recommend any period
of time for the renewal of
the mandate. According to
the report the present
strength of UNEF is 4,200
troops.
Although the UNEF area
of operation has remained
quiet in the last six months
the report pointed out none-
theless that "the situation is
the area as a whole remains
fundamentally unstable.
Whether it is possible to
maintain the present quiet
and prevent a new outbreak
of hostilities will depend on
the prospects of achieving
further progress in the
search for. a just and lasing
settlement of the Mideast
problem."

Israel Government-Created
Town Draws N. Americans
NEW YORK — Eighty
Americans and Canadians
are committed to settling in
Israel's newest- town,
Yamit, located on the south-
ern Mediterranean coast.
The first group of North
Americans left last summer
and an additional 25 persons
will leave by this summer.
They are temporarily living
in an absorption center in
Beersheba and will move
into their homes at Yamit in
August when the first hous-
ing units will be completed.
Members of this group,
comprised of professionals,
are involved in the actual
construction of Yamit. On
the construction site laying
bricks and mixing cement
and tar were recently an
American-born cantor, psy-
chologist and computer ex-
pert alongside Russian-born
and native Israeli construc-
tion workers. This town's
first school will open in Sep-
tember.
Built by the Israeli gov-
ernment, Yamit is de-
signed to have a popula-
tion of 250,000. It is to be
settled initially by families
who meet the criteria of
employability, age and
health.
Higher Technical
Skills, Design
and Construction
The government is offer-
ing loans and payment for
housing and businesses, and
Yamit settlers have the op-
tion to either rent or buy
their apartments.
No U.S. Guarantee
TEL AVIV .(ZINS) — Ac-
cording to Ha'aretz, which
cited well-informed and
highly-placed sources, Dr.
Henry Kissinger was unable
to give Israel any assurance
of continued oil supplies
after she would give up the
Abu Rodeis oil wells in the
Sinai, to reach a peace ac-
cord with Egypt.
