events, though no mention
is made of Jewish holidays.
The father, a loved but sha-
dowy figure, plays little or
no role at all.
Of the four poetically
named daughters, only, one
marries within the faith to
an Israeli, another chooses
a Lebanese Arab and a life
in Beirut and a third mar-
ries an amitious black doc-
tor whine idea of heaven is
to be a secure member of
the white establishment.
And of course, the heroine,
who opts for marriage but
neither time Jewish.
Given all this background,.
it is nothing short of mirac-
ulous she survives, not only
the deception and cruelty of
her affair, but finds, if not
fulfillment, the strength
and courage to return to her
loving but embittered
Chinese husband with more
understanding of herself
and of him in the hope of
salvation.
Admittedly, while this
occasionally - witty, fre-
quently funny book has,
depending on one's inhibi-
tions and sensibilities, the
power to shock and offend,
it also has the power to puz-
zle and provoke.
Assuming that one can
cope with the free and unin-
hibited language and vivid
descriptions, and allowing
that the author cannot and
does not speak for all
women, there is much in
this book that can speak to
most women.
And many men!
