Charming Narrative
About Generations

Tove Jansson provides
-.great charm in her newest
narrative, "The Summer
Book" (Random House).
Miss Jansson, already
or widely acclaimed for more
than 30 notable books, some
0, about and for children, adds
immensely to an apprecia-
*rion of the links as well as
the differences that affect
o. disparities in ages.
"The Summer Story" is
**about a grandmother and
her granddaughter who is
rs younger. It is a tale

tances between the genera-

ment and rejection. The love
theme dominates in the
Jansson tale because it is
also such a powerful deli-
neation of nature, of the ele-
ments that affect the two
characters that are close in
relationship, distant in
ages.
The Summer Book is a
Pantheon Publication,
translated from the Swed-
ish by Thomas Teal.

Jewish tradition requiFes
a ritual count every evening
between the second night of
Passover and Shavuot.
This count is ordered by
the Bible in the Book of Lev-
iticus. A number of reasons
have been offered for its
purpose.
Some claim that counting
the days and the weeks be-
tween the two festivals indi-
cates that the two events are
inseparable and indispensa-
ble to each other.
The achievement of free-
dom, which was the ac-
complishment of the Exo-
dus which is celebrated on
Passover is not complete
and has no meaning with-
out the event of the Reve-
lation which is celebrated
on the holiday of Shavuot.
Freedom without a pur-
pose or a goal is insignifi-
cant (Chinuch).
Some (Abudraham) claim
that the count was insti-
tuted because it was re-
quired for the people to be
in Jerusalem for both of
these holidays. Since the
period in between is only
seven weeks (Sefirat Omer),
it was important to keep
count of the days and weeks
so that the pilgrims who re-
turned to their homes in
between the two festivals
would be sure to start out
and to return in time to Je-
rusalem for the second festi-
val.
It also is mentioned that
the process of counting the
days and weeks displays a
sense of desire and anxiety
for the Revelation of the
word of the Almighty, just
as counting the days until a
great event.
It is further explained
that the process of counting
parallels the counting that
is done by an individual who
has become impurified.
That individual is required

to count (usually seven)
days until his state of im-
purity can be transformed
into a state of purity. The
people of Israel, having
dwelt in bondage, were con-
sidered in a state of impur-
ity. In order to receive the
Revelation they had to reach
a state of purity. Hence the \
count.
The seven weeks are
considered a sad period to
the extent that weddings
and happy occasions are
suspended until after the
Sefirat Omer.
Some claim that this is so
because in ancient times
this was the period between
the two spring harvests, i.e.,
the barley harvest during
the Passover season and the
wheat harvest during the
Shavuoth season. At such
times people are tense and
preoccupied.
Weddings and happy cele-
brations should ideally be
celebrated in an atmosphere
of relaxation and not ten-
sion. Even after the Jews
were exiled from Israel, this
period continued to be ob-
served in a melancholy fash-
ion because of the sadness
that overtakes one when he
remembers the ancient ac-
tivities which took place at
this season.
Furthermore, history
seemed to have selected
this period as a time when
tragedies befell the Jewish
people. In the Second Cen-
tury, 24,000 disciples of the
great Rabbi Akiba were
killed after the Bar
Kochba revolt ended in
failure. In the 11th and
12th centuries, Jews in
France and Germany espe-
cially suffered death and
destruction . during this
period in the course of the
Crusades.
The terrible destruction
of many communities in
Poland and the Ukraine
took place during this sea-
son in the 16th Century.
Beeause of these incidents
and even others that took
place at this season, this
period is still observed in a
state of mourning by Jews
everywhere.
