The Foreign Minister of
The Netherlands, Mak van
der Stoel, has postponed a
visit to Saudi Arabia ,be-
cause that country has re-
fused a vias to a Dutch
newspapetman, who is Jew-
ish.
"I wish to emphaSize,"
said the minister, "that the
Dutch government rejects
any form of discrimination
on the basis of race and
creed."
, The Netherlands was the
first country to be subjected
to the Arab embargo and
the last to have it lifted.
One might whimsically
say that the Dutch- have a
special kind of attachment
with anything Israel in it.
There was the great Dutch
Jew, Manasseh Ben Israel
who inducted Oliver
Cromwell to admit Jews to
England. Then there was
the famous Dutch Jewish
artist, Joseph Israels who
was to exert 'a great influ-
ence on Vincent Van Gogh.
But the action of the
Dutch government, of
course, springs from
broader grounds than these.
It derives from the Dutch
culture. The Netherlands
was the home of two men
who stand as mountain
peaks in the story of civiliza-
tion, the JeWish philoso-
p16er, Baruch Spinoza and
the artist, Rembrandt.
It may be traced still
deeper to the spirit of free-
dom which seems native to
the Dutch people and made
Holland always a refuge
from the tyrant. When the
Jews were expelled from
Spain, they fled to Holland.
When the Pilgrims were dri-
ven out of England, they
fled to Holland.
The Pilgrims, of course,
didn't remain in Holland, al-
though there was complete
freedom of religion there.

Besides freedom, a man
needs one other thing — a
job, and there weren't too
many jobs available in Hol-
land. Around Boston at that
time, it was different. You
picked up any paper, the
Puritan Daily News or the
Indian Post and it was full
of advertisements saying,
"Men Wanted." So the PH-
grims came to America.
Heine said that Puritan-
ism was a kind of Judaism
which allowed you to eat'
pork. The Puritans were
very fond of the Old Testa-
ment. They named their
children mostly after Old
Testament patriarchs and
prophets. The Dutch ori-
ginated Santa Claus. The
Puritans held rigidly to
the Bible and didn't ap-
prove of Santa Claus.
Jews have their Elijah,
the prophet, who visits ev-.
ery Jewish home on the
night of the seder, so why
shouldn't non-Jews have
their _Santa Claus, although
we have always thought he
shouldn't come down the
chimney and get all smutted
up. He should, like Elijah,
just ring the bell and come
in. Coming down the chim-
ney after riding on a sled is
a sure way to catch a cold.
The Dutch were great co-
lonizers. They established
the most successful or the
original American settle-
ments — that of New Am-
sterdam, which later be-
came_New Fork. It was to
New Amsterdam that the.
first Jews in America came,
just about 20 years after the
Pilgrims came to Massachu-
setts.
True, Peter Stuyvesant
wasn't too hospitable to the
Jews and wanted to deport
them, but it is well to re-
member the Dutch authori- -
ties overruled him. All peo-
ple have a few bad eggs like
Peter.
Up to the time of the
American Revolution,
most of the signs over the
stores in New York City
were in the Dutch lan-
guage.

Franklin D. Roosevelt
was of Dutch extraction.
Sometimes the Dutch ov-
erdo things a little. Take Rip
Van Winkle. He slept 20
years. That's a little too
long. A person who sleeps
that long will get nowhere.
But the point is the Dutch
don't sleep when tyranny
raises its head. '
Today we see some of the
suddenly created Arab bil-
lionaires not only keeping
Jews out of their countries
but trying to enter into
America and other coun-
tries and forcing busi-
nesses in other lands to
keep Jews out of them :—
trying, in a word to break
down the freedom of other
countries — and alas, we
see many of these coun-
tries fawning upon the
Arabs, ready to comply —
to sell freedom for gold.
It is inspiring that at this
time the Dutch still stand
immovably for right.
Hooray for the Dutch!
Democracy is a cause that
is never won, but I believe it
will never be lost.
