dialogue seem to fit to the
personality of Jack Lemmon
who projects on the screen
Neil Simon's symphony of
agonies, both the comic side
of garden-variety tragedy
and the tragic side of mod-
ern comedy.

The shlemiel portrayed
by Lemmon actually waits
for the inevitable loss of
employment, at the same
time fighting off an irate
neighbor, a couple of noisy
German airline steward-
esses, not noticing a trio of
burglars who rip off his
color TV and steal his
whiskey.

Anne Bancroft, Oscar-
winner for "The Miracle
Worker," plays the hapless
man's wife, sympathetic
and tolerant to the point of
a mental breakdown. Gene
Saks who portrayed the
Reform rabbi on Broadway
in "The Tenth Man," then
directed the film versions of
"Barefoot in the Park," "The
Odd Couple," and "Mame,"
switches back to face the
cameras as our hero's older
brother who unwittingly
humiliates him with advice
and money.

"The Sunshine Boys," an-
other Neil Simon comedy, is
being filmed at the MGM
studios with George Burns
replacing the late Jack
Benny in the role of nimble
Al Lewis, with Walter Mat-
thau as his heavy-weight
partner in a team of aging
vaudevillians who have
shared a successful career
— though they hated each
other all their lives.
"Sheila Levine Is Dead
and Living in New York"
written by Gail Parent with
self-hatred, yet compassion,
has become a surprisingly
mild, rather romantic movie
without a sting of the self-
imposed anti-Semitism of
the highly controversial
novel — except for the now
completely nonsensical title.

Albert Maltz, the novel-
ist, one of the blacklisted
"Hollywood Ten," and
film director Allen Reisner
currently are developing
"Witch Hunt," a two-hour
television movie for NBC
network based on the
hearings by the House
Committee on Un-Ameri-
can activities in the late
1940s.

written by Jud Kinberg and
Murray Smith, with Rich-
ard Widmark starring un-
der Peter Collinson's direc-
tion. The yarn tells us of the
conflict between the intel-
ligence forces of today's su-
perpowers. The picture is
being filmed in Jerusalem,
Jaffa and Tel Aviv.
Michael Douglas, son of
Kirk Douglas, is co-produc-
ing with Paul Zaentz the
motion picture version of
