The ceremony- in New York was one of many being held by Jewish com- munities throughout the country, including an ob- servance at Cong. Bnai Moshe in Oak Park. Benjamin Meed, presi- dent of WAGRO, set the theme for the ceremony which also marked the 30th anniversary of the lib- ' eration of the concentra- tion camps by American and allied troops, when he noted that 30 years ago the world allowed the Holo- caust to happen and it is possible that it would hap- pen again. The two mothers were joined in their strike by August Stern, the son of Dr. Mikhail Stern. The three are conducting their hunger strike--also in a dramatic plea for support of op- pressed Jews in the Soviet Union. The two women will par- ticipate in the Russian Je- wry solidarity rally Wednesday evening at the Detroit Jewish Community Flags in Israel' Recall Holocaust TEL AVIV (JTA) — Rare flags that recall anguished memories of Jewish com- munities destroyed by the Nazis are on display this week with other memorabi- lia at the new Maccabi Museum. The include the flag of the Dusseldorf Maccabi Club which a Jewish youth res- cued from burning when Nazis threw it into flames on the notorious "Crystal Night" 37 years ago. The Dusseldorf flag is flanked by the flag of the Czechoslovakian Maccabi which was saved when the Nazis marched -into Prague in 1939. The exhibit includes a flag of the Maccabi Club in Sofia, Bulgaria; a special medal given to Maccabi gymnasts by Theodor Herzl at the 1903 Zionist Congizess in Basel; and documents from Maccabi clubs in for- mer Jewish communities in Harbin, Manchuria, Shan- ghai, Cairo, Tripoli, Damas- cus, Warsaw, Vilna and Odessa. The new museum,- named for the veteran Mac- cabi leader Pierre Gildes- game, will serve as a re- search center for Jewish sports history. Center (see story on page 18). Meanwhile, the Na- tional Conference on So- viet Jewry reported that an appeal was filed in Moscow for Nashpitz and Tsitlionok. There was no immediate information as to when the appeal will be heard. At the same time, Bronx Borough- President Robert Abrams proclaimed Sunday as "Solidarity Sunday" for Soviet Jews in the Bronx and urged residents to join the march and rally. Eight Minsk Jewish activ- ists went on a three-day hunger strike to protest the exile sentence given Nash- pitz and Tsitlionok. Similar hunger strikes are being conducted by Jews in Moscow, Leningrad, Odessa, Kiev, Vilna, Kishi- nev and other cities. Some 100 Jews are believed to be involved in the hunger strikes. * * * Milwaukee Rabbi Has World 'Record for Rope Skipping MILWAUKEE (JTA) — Milwaukee Rabbi Francis Barry Silberg claimed the world record last week- for continuous rope skipping as recorded by the Guinness Book of Wo-rld Records. • He jumped 35,000 rope revolutions in four hours and 10, minutes-to surpass a previous record. To prepare himself for the feat, Silber, 32, ran 10 to 15 miles daily and jumped rope whever rabbinic duties allowed the time. He is _the associate rabbi at Cong. Emanu-El B'ne Jeshurun. Completing his jumping, Silberg still had enough en- ergy to do five pushups. Set- ting world records are not new. to the rabbi. On Aug. 12, 1968, he ran the snake path route up Masada in 16 minutes, 20 seconds, beat- ing even the best Israeli par- atroopers who use the run for_training. Soviet Trade Boss Cuts British Visit G(Iti LONDON (JTA) — Alex- ander Shelepin, the Soviet trade union boss, Politburo member and former head of the KGB (secret police) left Britain last week almost' surreptitiously by way of Glasgow, cutting what was to have been a four-day visit to two days and leaving the general impression of a fiasco, especially on the part of the leaders of the Trade Union Congress who had invited him here. At his only press confer- ence, Shelepin blamed "Zionists" mainly for the widespread demonstrations against him. Although British Jewry was opposed to the visit of the man they hold largely responsible for the anguish of many Soviet Jews seeking exit visas, the biggest dem- onstrations against Shele- pin were staged by Ukraini- ans, Lithuanians and other Soviet ethnic minorities in Britain. 2 during our GREAT MEMORIAL WEEKENDS!
