Israelis Say It Can't Get Worse
c
There was not a dissent-
ing voice in the belief that a
war was inevitable; there
was not a doubt that the
next war also will be won by
Israel; equally unanimously
there was regret that war
was to be 'anticipated. The
cry is for peace, the offer of
many concessions.
The saddening aspect of
the existing situation is that
there is a basic cause for the
acceptance of the inevitable
and the tragic: There is a
lack of faith in the form a
Sadat promise was to be
made to Israel via Kissinger.
Even agreement on a UN
force on the borders is inad-
equate. Gamal Abdel Nas-
ser dispatched the UNEF
(United Nations Expedition-
ary Force) home in 1967.
What's to stop similar dis-
ruption in the future?
Israeli Hospital
Hit by Fire
TEL AVIV (JTA) — A
e that gutted Sheba Medi-
cal Center near Tel Aviv de-
stroyed the medical files of
some 50,000 Israeli war in-
valids. -
The blaze, attributed to a
short circuit, destroyed a
medical rehabilitation cen-
ter and an X-ray unit. Hos-
pital officials have set up
makeshift clinics for out-
patients.
Local authorities, mean-
while, are trying to head off
a threatened nationwide
firemen's strike. The fire-
fighters are demanding
higher wages and special
hazard bonuses. Israel's fire
department employs only
750 men throughout the
country which is about one-
fifth the manpower needed.
Under a Kissinger plan
even a Faisal might con-
ceivably have participated
in a non-belligerency
agreement. What protec-
tion is there in a society of
family feuds that brings
death to a king of Saudi
Arabia at the hands of a
nephew?
Is there a, measure of even
partial security and confi-
dence in reduction in dan-
gers to a people that has not
enjoyed too many secure
years? Hardly!
Example: Nahum, now 27
is a veteran of the Six-Day
War and of the Sinai bat-
tles. He had been called into
frequent service during the
War of Attrition (1970). He
experienced new dangers in
the Yom Kippur War on the
Golan Heights. From April
1974 to April 1975 he was in
active service. 210 days: 210
out of 365 days in military
action! That's Israel's pre-
sent fate in the dedication to
survival!
Another example: Israel
is now on constant guard
against terrorists, in protec-
tion of their families. In Je-
rusalem, Hebrew University
professors, rabbis, doctors,
men in many professions,
share duties in civil protec-
tion activities. They take
turns to be on guard lest the
savages who killed innocent
men, women and children
should make new attempts
at a barbarism with their
inhumanities. In Rishon le-
Zion, former Detroiter
Moshe Heyman has organ-
ized a similar civil defense
group and the professional
accountant, the father of
Attache Denies
Slurs to Israel
JERUSALEM' (JTA) —
Daniel'Nestor, the economic
and commercial attache at
the United States Consulate
in East Jerusalem, denied
that he had made remarks
disparaging to Israel at a re-
cent meeting with West
Bank Arab businessmen in
Ramallah.
According to press re-
ports here, Nestor said at a
Ramallah Chamber of Com-
merce meeting that the
West Bankers soon will not
need Israeli permits to con-
duct business "because Is-
rael will have nothing to say
in these matters."
Nestor also allegedly ad-
vised the Arab merchants to
do business directly with
American firms rather than
through Israeli or Jordanian
firms and suggested that
they open their own office in
the U.S. to encourage Amer-
ican investments on the
West Bank.
Nestor said that he had
said nothing of a political
nature to the Ramallah
Chamber of Commerce. He
said he had merely in-
formed the Arab merchants
of the trade opportunity
program offered by the U.S.
Department of Commerce
which promoted contacts
between American and ov-
erseas businessmen. "My
job is simply to explain the
services and to promote the
trade," Nestor said.
three young children, now
carries a gun!
Nahum and Moshe and
their half million counter-
parts who are engaged in
action for Israel's defense
are accepting their duties'
stoically, without com-
plaint. But the very tragic
factor has been injected in
such an experience: the
perpetuation of distrust
and the injection of bitter
hatreds. Jews can not"for-
give the Arabs an enmity
that disrupts the peace of
the Middle East.
They can forgive even less
the creation of the hatred.
Savagery has given birth to
resentment and hatred, and
for having created it Jews
generally can not forgive a
generation of potentates
who have forced their peo-
ples into the inhumanities
— all for the sake of another
few miles of land.
History's lessons are end-
less. Once again Jews read
in the Psalms that their
slogan is "1(1 OrtlItt . ." I
shall not die but live. Then,
because of the determina-
tion to live, they must strive
for friendships among
neighbors and governments
and are suddenly blamed
for and the refusal to sub-

they learn from the Psal-
mist: Al tivtekhu b'ne-

Jew. That's the role of his-1
tory. Isn't it part of the ex-
perience that is rooted in
Jewish survival?

Kissinger and his mission.
Life now seems to proceed
with renewed normalcy;
and normalcy for the Is-
raeli, as for the Jew
throughout history, is never
without dangers.
Clinging fast to the -hope
that the only friend on the
international scene — the
United States — will not
abandon the endangered
nation with a sense of assur-
4-ice that the kinsmen,
,brld Jewry, will stand fast
Cvy the redeemed nation bat-
tling for survival, the func-
tions of state and nation
seem to have acquired a new
determination.
A long holiday again
was marked by thousands
of visitors who nearly
filled the hotels, the Pesah
was greeted by arriving
guests who filled to capac-
ity the El Al Israel planes,
a festive spirit was shared
by citizens and tourists.
All in defiance of the gen-
erally accepted view that a
war may be inevitable.
Example: Four genera-
tions were gathered in Nes
Zionah, where pioneers
among the builders of Zion
had struggled for some 80
years to establish a strong
farming community in Er-
etz Israel. The young and
their elders in this gather-
ing included some who had
lived for a time in Detroit.
