Vinnell Strikes Bias Clauses
From U.S. Defense Contract

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Discriminatory provisions
in the contract between the
Defense Department and a
California company it had
engaged to train Saudi Ara-
bian troops have been de-
leted but "hundreds" of
other defense contracts may
contain similar clauses.
The existence of the
clauses in the $77 million
contract with the Vinnell
Corp. of Alhambra specifi-
,----Ncally banned the hiring of
women and, apparently of
Jews, to work in Saudi Ara-
bia was admitted by De-
fense Department witnesses
at a hearing before the
House Subcommittee on
International, Political and
Military Affairs headed by
Rep. Dante Fascell (D.-
Fla.).
Benjamin Foreman, asso-
ciate general counsel at the
Defense Department, said
provisions of the Vinnell
contract were at variance
with U.S. laws, and the Pen-
tagon informed the com-
pany that its contract was
illegal. The sections were
then stricken out, he said.

the Vinnell contract, which
are contrary to federal civil
rights laws and other laws,
raised the question as to
how many such phrases
may be found in "hundreds
of such contracts around the
world."
Meanwhile, the House
Government Information
and Individual Rights Sub-
committee led by Rep. Bella
Abzug (D.-N.Y.), announced
it will hold three days of
hearings Tuesday through
Thursday to examine the
effects of the Arab boycott
on American laws and citi-
zens. Its emphasis will be on
assignment of personnel to
Middle East countries by
federal government and gov-
ernmental contractors.
In Amsterdam, the Dutch
Council of Churches and
Dutch Roman Catholic
Bishops have decided not to
issue baptismal certificates
to Dutch travelers.

The voyagers have been
asked to produce the cer-
tificates in order to obtain
tourist and business visas
for Arab countries.

Appeals, Interfaith Seders
Mark the Passover Holiday

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Governor Hugh L. Carey
said in a message on the eve
of Passover that "Even as
we celebrate the courage of
the Jewish people, and the
tribulations they endured to
win their religiou§ freedom
4,000 years ago, we sadly ac-
knowledge that their trials
are not yet over."

He noted that this past
year alone, "we witnessed
an avowed terrorist being
allowed to use the forum of
the United Nations to
spread his hatred; and the
continued suppression of
freedom in Syria, the Soviet
Union and other countries
around the world."
Meanwhile, more than
120 Soviet Jews, in a Pas-
sover message received here
by the Greater New'York
Conference on Soviet Jewry
and the Student Struggle
for Soviet Jewry, appealed
for "active support" for
those in the USSR who are
engaged in a continuing
struggle for freedom.

This measure has been
tagged as discriminatory
against Jews and therefore
condemned by Dutch
churches. The bishops have
advised priests under them
not to issue the certificates.

Balancing of the budget
was made possible by
pledges of increased contri-
butions by friends organiza-
tions throughout the world,
in response to board chair-
man Sam Rothberg's ad-
monition that with Israel's
economic crisis and declin-
ing government support, the
University must rely more
heavily on its friends.

While barring Jews was
not specifically mentioned,
the contract required that
Vinnell was not to hire
anyone associated with or
interested in a country
with which Saudi Arabia
had no diplomatic rela-
tions.

At the Fifth Avenue Pres-
byterian Church in New
Yoik a group of prominent
Christian and Jewish cler-
gymen participated in a
Passover seder coordinated
by the Interreligious Task
Force on Soviet Jewry.
The ceremony gave ex-
pression to the Passover-
Easter spirit of man's quest
for freedom. The clergymen
urged the Christian commu-
nity to take part in "Soli-
darity Sunday for Soviet
Jewry" on April 13.
