He was afraid to take a cab to the Jewish Ghetto in Damascus, be- cause the driver would im- mediately inform the Syr- ian Intelligence Service. Therefore, he walked for hours through the streets of mascus until a man wed him the way, but was afraid to approach the ghetto. The journalist walked through dark, dirty streets. People ran from him. Children stopped their play and fled. "Why do you want to talk to Jews?" they asked the journalist. "They are living together with their Arab neighbors and feel very well." The journalist found out that there had been no wed- dings in the ghetto for five years. Jews are not allowed to move outside the ghetto. Jews are not accepted as employees in government institutions and banks. Syrian officers and sol- diers do not buy in Jewish shops. Jews are not al- lowed to talk to tourists. A part of the. Jewish ceme- tery was destroyed.in or- der to pave a new road. The Jewish teachers in two Jewish schools were replaced by Arab teachers. Jewish school children are not allowed to study the Bible, only Jewish prayers. Policemen often visit the Jewish synagogues. Palestinian refugees take money from the Jews. Houses and lots are confis- cated by the authorities. Jews have nothing left to Jewish Cemeteries in Poland Are Safe NEW YORK — Reports that the Polish government intends to demolish the ce- metery for Jewish ghetto victims in Lodz are untrue, reports Agudath Israel of America, national Orthodox Jewish movement, based on information from Senator Jacob K. Javits (R.-N.Y.). Senator Javits informed Agudath Israel that he had learned that there were no plans to destroy any of the Jewish cemeteries in Po-- land, and in fact several Jewish cemeteries in that country are under study for designation as national monuments. It is the duty of the civi- lized world to demand from all international organiza- tions to appeal to the Syrian authorities to put an end to this inhuman treatment.
