ROSENBLATT Armed Forces Jewish Chaplain in Mid-Pacific Hawaii Naval Station HAWAII — Many Jews might have a hard time be- lieving - that a very active Jewish community exists on a tiny Pacific island 6,000 miles away from California. But on Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands, 87 Jews — military and civilian — un- der the leadership of a dedi- cated and hardworking Jew- ish military lay leader, are seriously involved in their Jewish communal life. Recently, a house trailer, complete with air-condition- ing, kosher kitchen,• three classrooms and a chapel area seating 55 people, was formally dedicated as the KMR Jewish Center of the Pacific. It is the first perma- nent home of the Jewish community of Kwajalein. The little atoll, buried in the World War II history of the Marshall Islands, where vigorous fighting took place, is not too distant from where the first nuclear bomb was tested. It is cur- rently the site for ballistic missle testing under the di- rection of the U.S. Army, which employs contractor personnel for research and development of new types of rocket projectiles. At present, the Jews of Kwajalein take part in Sabbath evening worship, religious school, and adult Jewish education. The dedication of the KMR Jewish Center was the fulfillment of a dream, my dream for a dignified place for Jewish worship and study. I am the supervisory chaplain of the Jewish pro- gram at Kwajalein in addi- tion to my duties as Armed Forces Jewish Chaplain for the mid-Pacific (stationed in Hawaii), where I serve members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Marines. Melvin Winderman, a registered X- ray technician, is the lay leader of the -community. For many years Kwaja- lein did not have a real home for its local Jewish commu- nity; its one existing chapel was built as a church solely for Protestant and Catholic worship. Through the work of lay leader Winderman, who devoted many lours to help bring about my dream, the KMR Jewish Center was established. The dream was born some three years ago when I con- ducted my first Bar Mitzva on the atoll. This was fol- lowed by the traditional wedding of an Israeli cou- ple, who asked that the wed- ding ceremony be done completely in Hebrew, with the writing of the tradi- tional Hebrew ketuba and with the ceremony of kin- yan. In the absence of a Jewish place of worship, the ceremony was held out- doors (with the hupa made from home-grown palm branches), followed by a traditional wedding meal held under the blue Pacific sky. The hupa was subse- quently used as the basis for a communal sukka, which served as a focal point in activating the Jewish community to ex- press their Jewish long- ings. Since the dedication of the KMR Jewish Center, many non-Jewish members of the Kwajalein Missle Range have attended var- ious Jewish functions to see for the first time in their lives how their Jewish neighbors celebrate their religious traditions. Many non-Jews have helped decorate and fix up the Jew- ish Center, which has brought about much good will and interfaith under- standing. '• • The secret of the success of the KMR Jewish program seems to lie in the mainte- nance of a clear channel of communication between the lay leader and the military rabbi, even though we are separated by more than 3,000 miles. The lay leader phones me weekly to discuss his program and writes frequently. On my last visit to Kwaja- lein. at a large party for the children of the Jewish com- munity, I distributed many "goodies" supplied by the National Jewish Welfare Board. Much of the success of the Jewish program and activities on Kwajalein is the direct result of the work of Jewish military lay leader Melvin Winder- man. In this letter from Winderman to the JWB Commission on Jewish Chaplaincy, he describes the things that can be ac- complished. To begin with, I have or- ganized an advisory com- mittee. For our small popu- lation, I have a president, secretary and treasurer, plus planning and education. committees. I have desig- nated various members of our congregation for spe- cific duties, such as an oneg chairman, who will weekly assign a family to handle same; also a Hebrew teacher who, with the aid of some of the older post-Bar Mitzva boys, will teach the younger children. Our presi- dent, Stan Krieger, is well educated in Hebrew and teaches the older children and, adults in our Hebrew school (beginning Hebrew). We are now organizing a Sunday school for the young children, where, under my supervision along with other adult su- pervision, our older girls will teach the young about Jewish culture.
