The 10-day conference has brought together ex- perts to examine the inter- active effects of migration, mutation and natural selec- tion pressures, mating and behavioral patterns genetic forms and mechanisms of sexuality, recombination and other phenomena in- volved in the evolutionary development of animals and plants. Improved mathematical definitions of these proc- esses and careful evaluation of field and laboratory data would greatly aid the solu- tion of many practical and theoretical challenges, such as those of practical geneti- cists involved in crop breed- ing, doctors engaged in ge- netic counselling, environmentalists, and evo- lutionist theoreticians. Some 40 scientists from Europe, North America and Australia have joined 20 of their Israeli col- leagues in discussing var- ious aspects of theoretical and practical population genetics and ecology. Meanwhile, the factors causing blood to clot when it comes into contact with-cer- tain surfaces — which in turn may lead to throm- bosis, embolisms and fatal complications — will be in- vestigated by the institute's Prof. Alexander Silberberg and Israel Millo under the terms of a recently awarded two-year contract from the Health and Lung Institute of the U.S. National Insti- tutes-of Health. Their research is intended to provide fundamental PFLP Official Studies Battle Near Lebanon JERUSALEM — It was reported here that in a re- cent issue of Al Hadaf, the Beirut newspaper of the Popular Front for the Liber- ation of Palestine, a man identified as the com- mander of PFLP military forces in Kfar Shouba re- viewed the fighting there with Israeli troops who at- tacked bases which had been used to launch death missions across the border into Israel. According to the newspa- per, the unnamed com- mander said: "The suicide actions have a great effect on the mind of the Israeli soldier and the common man in our land. Asked whether there was any coordination between the various fedayeen groups in south Lebanon, the com- mander replied: "There was complete coordination between all the factions in the Kfar Shouba area, particularly between the Popular Front, Fatah and the General Command. Habash Shuns Peace Talks TEL AVIV — In an inter- view published in the Beirut newspaper Al Bayrak, George Habash, the leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, said the fedayeen leadership should "capitalize on what has happened and remove it- self completely from the settlement framework that has been presented (at Ge- neva), and return to the na- tional Palestinian position as it has been determined by our people's struggle over dozens of years," i*was re- ported here. "By this I mean that there is a minimal Palestinian national position. This mini- mum is the rejection of any recognition of the Zionist entity, a refusal to negotiate with it and a strengthening of faith in our masses' abil- ity to shatter this entity. "We must clearly and openly declare our rejection of any settlement based on the continued existence of this foreign entity."
