Detroiter Serves
3 Generations for
Pidyon Habenim
A pidyon haben (redemp-.
tion of the first born son) is
a special celebration in it-
self, but the ceremony for
Brian Ross Marks will be a
little more special.
The April 6 ceremony for
the infant, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Sherwin Marks of
Golfview Dr., Troy, will
mark the third generation
of Markses for whom Henry
Cohen ; a kohen, will per-
form the rite.
Cohen first performed the
service for the Marks family
in 1925 following the birth
of Bernie Marks, grand-
father of Brian. In 194'8 Ber-
nie had a son, Sherwin, and
Cohen was summoned
again. 'Now Sherwin is a
father and Cohen was called
on again.
During the ceremony,
the kohen offers the equi-
valent of five shekels, five
silver dollars, to the father
and asks the father
whether he prefers to give
the child or the money.
The father replies that he
∎vould rather keep the
child.
The kohen then takes the
money, holds it over the
head of the child, announces
that the money is the child's
ransom, and pronounces the
priestly blessing and words
of benediction over him. The
ceremony takes place one
month after the child's
birth.
America first: not merely
in things material, but in
the things of the spirit like-
wiSe; in the "righteousness
that exalteth a nation" and
in the freedom and justice
by which alone it can sur-
vive.
Akiva Evaluates
Own Programs
Akiva Hebrew Day School
is undergoing a self-evalua-
tion after completing its
10th year of existence and
graduating its first senior
class.
The three-phase evalua-
tion began with a subjective
overview in which members
of the education committee
visited the school for ex-
tended periods of time over
a six-week period. The
second phase consisted of
faculty meetings where
teachers gathered accordin
to their respective fields
discuss their observatio
and experience.
The third phase, com-
pleted March 17, was an
evaluation by a team of rab-
bis from Torah Umesorah,.
the National Society for
Hebrew Day Schools.
The team, comprised of
Rabbis Sholom Rephun,
principal of the Manhattan
Day School, and Hayim
Medetsky, principal of the
Bais Yaakov School of
Queens, met with teachers,
visited classes and ad-
dressed parents of the stu-
dents and the school's board
of directors.
