5 Jewish Ballplayers in Majors
BY IRWIN COHEN
Editor & Publisher
The Baseball Bulletin
Baseball's monthly newspaper
The ranks of Jewish ball-
players have been depleted a
bit for the 1975 season. Mike
Epstein was released early
last season and Richie

Editor, The Jewish News:
In the March 10 "Time"
magazine cover story on
"American Jews and Is-
rael," appears the widely-
held opinion that "without
benefit or need of formal
treaty, the U.S. and Israel
have enjoyed a unique his-
torical relationship.
Senator Stuart Syming-
ton on the "Issues & An-
swers," (ABC)-TV program
March 16, sought to differ-
entiate between the U.S.
commitment to Cambodia
and to Israel and could only
think of Pres. Truman's at-
tachment to the cause for
Israel and the U.S. support
of the 1947 U.N. Palestine-
partition decision.
Has everyone forgotten
that Hershel V. Johnson,
the U.S. representative to
the UN in 1947, cited the
almost 25-year U.S. formal
treaty commitment to the
Palestine Mandate of the
League of Nations?

since his marriage to Mari-
lynn Levy a number of years
ago studied Judaism and
recently converted.
Outside of Carew, there
are two in the American
League and two in the Na-
tional League. Only the two
American Leaguers figure
to make any mark on the
pennant race this season.
Ron Blomberg of the New
York Yankees figures to do
a lot more designated hit-
ting this year as the Yanks
are a good bet to go all the
way.
The full text of the Pales-

War Exercises
Raise Tensions
TEL AVIV (JTA) — Is-
raeli forces have been placed
on high alert on both the
Egyptian and Syrian fronts
following the collapse of
peace talks with Egypt.
Israeli military sources
expressed serious concern
over the massive military
build-ups by Egypt and
Syria and the large-scale
war exercises conducted by
both countries just behind
the cease-fire lines.
The war atmosphere was
increased by a statement by
the Egyptian Chief of Staff
Saturday that Egyptian
forces must be prepared to
complete the mission
started on Oct. 6, 1973—the
day Egypt and Syria
launched the Yom Kippur
War.
provisions for U.S. partici-
pation in implementing the
reconstitution of the Jewish
National Home in Palestine.
The Balfour Declaration
does not unambiguously
provide for this, but the
League document is
stronger.

Yiddish Study
Editor, The Jewish News;
The Yiddish Committee
of the Metropolitan Detroit
Jewish Community Center
urges the religious and secu-
lar institutions to include
lectures on Yiddish, Yiddish
literature and Yiddish folk
music in their next season's
cultural programs.
It is of the utmost import-
ance that American Jews
know that Yiddish is a rich
language and the longest
spoken by the vast majority
of the Jewish people in Je-
wry's history.
Yiddish novelists and
poets are world famous and
have been translated in al-
most all literary languages.
Similarly, Yiddish periodi-
cals compare with the
world's best: foremost is "Di
Goldene Keyt" published in
Israel.
Yiddish is taught at Col-
umbia University and other
universities, colleges, and in
some high schools. It is still
spoken by hundreds of thou-
sands of Jews in the Ameri-
cas, Israel and Europe.

5 Arab Terrorists
Die Near Fatahland
TEL AVIV (JTA) — Five
Arab terrorists were killed
in recent days by Israeli
patrols in the Har Dov re-
gion on the western slopes
of Mt. Hermon overlooking
Fatahland. There were no
Israeli casualties in army
communique reported.
Meanwhile, 10 members
of a terrorist gang in the
Gaza Strip have been ar-
rested during the past sev-
eral days.
see how his absence affects
the important September
games that are played on
Rosh Hashana and Yom
Kippur. You see, Blom-
berg is the only Jewish
player that will not report
to the stadium on all of the
High Holidays.
Ken Holtzman, who
pitched in the World Series
the last three years for Oak-
land, says the only time he
won't pitch is Yom Kippur
night. Religious feelings
aside, Blomberg and Holtz-
man could very well decide
which American team
makes it to the World Series
since the Yankees and A's
are expected to meet in the
league playoffs.
Is Israel Ready
to Free Capucci?
JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
Government circles are nei-
ther confirming nor denying
reports that are being
widely circulated here that
the government is prepared
to offer freedom to the im-
prisoned -Christian cleric
Capucci in exchange for the
emigration of Jews from
Syria.
Archbishop Capucci is
now serving a sentence of 12
years after having been con-
victed on a charge of smug-
gling weapons to terrorists.
