For the past 15 years Is- raeli artist Esther Eliashiv has been living outside Is- rael. But in her first exhibi- tion in the U.S., scheduled to open in New York next month, the major theme is Jerusalem. "Jerusalem for me is not only a place to live in," Mrs. Eliashiv says, "Jerusalem is something that one carries inside himself, a city to be belonged to and think about . . . In my painting I have my personal interpretation of Jerusalem, the way I see it and feel it." Mrs. Eliashiv, a third gen- eration sabra, is married to an Israeli diplomat at the United Nations. Because of his career she has worked and had exhibitions in Rome, Canberra, Mel- bourne, Singapore and Jeru- salem. Although she takes care of three sons (6, 13, 15), and fulfills duties in rela- tion to her husband's posi- tion, Esther paints and draws five to six hours a day. "The children are mar- velous," she says smiling. "When they see me busy they never disturb me • 9 9 Israel, her husband, is very encouraging. "He likes my paintings and they are important to him,". she says, adding, "In a way, staying home and painting is better than sitting in cafes and gossiping; isn't it?" It appears that her hus- band is not the only one who likes her work. Art critics who reviewed her previous exhibitions praised her paintings and ability as an artist. Ong Choo Suat, an art critic for the New Na- tion in Singapore, wrote, "In addition to powerful feel- ings, there is an intriguing mystic quality in her paint- ings expressed very skill- fully through the portrayal of light . . . Her yellows, reds, purples, greens and others are not only attrac- tive colors — they also ex- press powerful emotions." Although she visits Israel frequently, Esther admits that after so many years away from her homeland she misses Israel a great deal. "I am sorry that my children could not have the same wonderful childhood as I had as a child in Israel," she said. The HUC-JIR, Reform Judaism's institution of higher learning, will observe its centennial anniversary this fall as the oldest rab- binic school in North Amer- ica. During his 25 years since ordination, Rabbi Rubin, a native of Boston, has served pulpits at Temple Sinai, Roslyn, New York; and Temple Israel, St. Louis. HAMBURG (ZINS) — The German weekly Der Spiegel has published de- tails of a top-secret study made at the behest of Yasir Arafat by London's "Middle East Economic Consult- ants" on plans for a "Pa- lestinian state." The survey deals with the feasibility of an indepen- dent Palestinian state con- tained within the bounda- ries of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. It finds that such an area would not be able to absorb an additional 3 million Pa- lestinians, especially in view of the fact that it already contains 1,150,000 Arab res- idents. On the other hand — the survey states — neither is Israel capable of absorbing all of world Jewry, but it serves as a spiritual center.
