Sad Reminder of the Holocaust

one place to the other; he
couldn't help. In 1940, he be-
came a citizen of Palestine,
and transmitted papers to
Zhava in Poland, saying
that she was the wife of a
British protected citizen;
the three children were also
protected under that same
classification.

Editors Note: Professor
Bauer is the head of the
Institute of Contemporary
Jewry of the Hebrew Uni-
versity and its Department
of Holocaust Studies. His
most recent book is "My
Brother's Keeper," a his-
tory of the American Joint
Distribution Committee.
Prof. Bauer is one of the
luminaries of the "First
International Scholars
Conference on the Holo-
caust — A Generation
After" which took place in
New York on March 3-6,
under the sponsorship of
Hebrew University and
the United Jewish Appeal.

That was what kept
them alive until October,
1942. They had left War-
saw and were living in a
small ghetto to the south of
the city. In October of '42,
everybody knew what was
happening to Jews who
were shipped away. There
were no secrets anymore,
and it was quite clear if
they stayed on, they would
share the fate of the mil-
lions who were being
killed by the Nazis.

About five weeks ago I
went to an armored division
in the Sinai outside Gideon
and lectured to the soldiers.
I visited the commander, a
general who was born in Tel
Aviv 38 years ago.
His father, a teacher in a
secondary school in Tel
Aviv, had an aunt, Doda
Zhava (Aunt Goldie) living
in Poland in 1939, married
to the owner of a luxury tex-
tile shop in Warsaw, Uncle
Abraham. Uncle Abraham
came to Palestine in 1939
because he wanted to immi-
grate with Zahava and their
three children, to be near
his brother. He was looking
around for a job and some
place to live when the war
broke out and he couldn't
get back to Poland.
Of course, Abraham be-
came frantic. He went from

A member of the Jewish
Council came to Zahava's
home accompanied by a
German. He said, "You are
the wife of a citizen of Pa-
lestine. There's a train wait-
ing in Krakow with Allied
citizens, British protected
citizens to be exchanged in
Haifa for Germans living in
Palestine.

"If you want to, you can
join that train with your
three children. The train is
leaving in one hour's time."
She said, "But my two
older children are not at
home." (One was working
outside the ghetto in a fac-
tory and the older girl was
searching for food. Only her
13 year old boy was with
her.)

although I very much doubt
it. In a sense, she too, died in
the Holocaust.

She was faced with a ter-
rible choice. She could ei-
ther lose her three children
or she could save the youn-
ger child. She had exactly
one hour to make her deci-
sion and she did.
She went to a neighbor
and she took the boy and the
girl of her neighbor and her
own 13 year old boy and she
went on that train. She ar-
rived in Haifa Nov. 13, 1942.
Doda Zahava is still alive.
She has a little store just off
the Zubick Synagogue on
Allenby Street in Tel Aviv. I
suppose you classify her as
a survivor of the Holocaust

That story represents
the Jewish people. We are
survivors of the Holocaust
and yet we died in it. And
that fact means that we
have to do what is in our
power to help prevent it
from happening again.

You'd go
a long way for a
weekend like this,
but isn't it nice you
don't have to?

One of the means by
which we can do it is by
learning about it, by doing
the necessary historical,
philosophical and literary
research. We must show the
young generation, Jews and
non-Jews, what happened.
