Center's Independence Week

An art exhibit and sale
will be featured at the main
Jewish Community Center
during the Jewish Commu-
nity's celebration of Israel
Independence Week, April
12-20. The exhibit-sale will
feature outstanding works -
by Israeli artists Sharir,
Reuven Reuben, Gat, Weil,
Rotholz, and many other
well known Israelis.
There will be oils, water
colors, and graphics —
framed and ready to hang,
as well as a young collectors
corner of reasonably priced
unframed graphics. The ex-
hibit is open to the public
without charge.
A lobby gift shop will also
be available and will feature
assorted products of Israel
— novelties, small art ob-
jects, sweets and posters.

Chelouche Street" and
"Lupo" will be shown
throughout the week in the
Aaron DeRoy Theater.
"The House on Chelouche
Street," starring Gila Alma-
gor, received an Academy
Award nomination for Best
Foreign Film. "Lupo," is a
popular comedy starring
Yehuda Barkan.
Another film special will
be "The Fragrance of Is-
rael," a series of short films
dealing with many facets of
Israel and her people.
"Fragrance of Israel" will be
shown 8 p.m. April 15 in
conjunction with a special
Israeli exhibit.
Both the film and exhibit
are being co-sponsored by
El Al Israel Airlines and the
Israeli Students Organiza-
tion, and will be preceded by
a memorial service for those
who died in Israel's wars of
independence. For informa-

LZA Will Hear
Israeli Professor

Dr. Arie Shirom, chair-
man of the department of
Labor Rleations at Tel Aviv
University, will speak at the
Labor Zionist Alliance
"Branch Four Forums" 8:30
p.m. Sunday at the Labor
Zionist Institute.
Dr. Shirom, research
professor at the Institute
for Social Research of the
University of Michigan, will
speak on "The PLO and Its
Effect Upon World Jewry".
An Israeli by birth, Dr.
Shirom received his bache-
lor's degree at the Hebrew
University in Jerusalem. He
completed his PhD at the
University. of Wisconsin in
1968. Upon his return to Is-
rael, he became a member
of the faculty of Tel Aviv
University, becoming chair-
man of the department of
labor relations in 1971.
The public is invited. Re-
freshments will be served
following the session. For
information, call the Labor
Zionist Alliance, 851-1606.

Program Started •

The completion of a pilot
program designed to provide
background information
and training for persons ,
who wish to engage in pub-
lic speaking activities on
behalf of the Jewish com-
munity, was deemed suc-
cessful by Lewis S. Gross-
man, president of the
Jewish Community Council.
Forty community mem-
bers, chosen on the basis of
their interests and involve-
ment by the presidents and
leaders of communal organ-
izations attended the first
seminar Sunday at the main
Jewish Community Center. -
Sponsored by the Jewish
Community Council and the
Michigan chapter of the
American Jewish Congress,
the seminar focused on
basic background informa-
tion useful in preparing
speeches and presentations
and tactics for countering
anti-Israel propaganda.
