A slate of candidates was announced for the May elec- tion to the Council's Execu- tive committee. Lerner began his descrip- tion of the work of the Re- settlement Service by noting that the agency was started in the 1930s to help accom- modate refugees from Naz- ism in Europe, and later the refugees who emigrated to the United States after World War II from the dis- placed persons camps. Since that post-war pe- riod, the service had been kept in operation to help the trickle of immigrants who came as a result of the Hun- garian and Cuban revolu- • tions, as well as occasional small groups of emigres from Eastern European na- tions. Soviet Jewish emigra- tion began in the mid- 1960s after Premier Kosy- gin stated that the -USSR had no objection to allow- ing Soviet citizens to reu- nite their families with relatives living overseas.
