While Iran supports Arab demands for possession of Jerusalem, the logic of the situation calls for internali- zation of the Holy City, the envoy said, because of the world population figures of the three religions involved. The Zahedi interview fol- lowed a luncheon with dip- lomatic correspondents here at which the chief guest was-- Iranian Minister for Fi- nance, Husang Ansary, after he signed a $12 million trade agreement between Iran and the United States here. • ---Ansary's remark s prin- cipally concerned oil and investments. -However, in response to a question he said, "We do accept Is- rael's existance," that UN Resolution 242 "is the only solution for peace in the area," that the Palestini- ans "have a right to exist" and that "Israel made mistakes in the past" and would have been "better off" to have engaged in ne- gotiatiorts four or, five years ago. He praised the U.S. for its "even-handed policy" and wished Secretary of, State Henry A. Kissinger "well on his trip." Ansary also said that Iran was never a party to any oil embargo. It has been a country tolerant of creed, color and human beings for a thousand years. Melvin Price (D.- III.), in its February visit to the Middle East, appeared impressed by the determi- nation of Israelis to defend their land and survival as a nation. "One thing that becomes - plain from a visit with the Israelis is that their resent- _ ment and intense feeling - about the history of their people is such that they will , never surrender their coun- try without a bitter fight," the subcommittee's report said. "Such a conflict risks the involvement of other nations of the world beyond the Middle East." Similarly, the Israelis be- lieve they require high points west of the Jordan River. (Last week the com- mittee recommended to Congress that it delay ship- ment of some arms items requested by Israel.) The report affirmed that the U.S. cannot "cast aside" or turn over its responsibil- ity in the search for peace to another power "because only the United States has the trust and confidence of the Israelis" and "the United States has developed trust and confidence on the Arab side- by attempting to follow an even-handed pol- icy." . 111111 11 111111 1111111 W. The four men, Ernst Eh- lers, 65; Constantin Canaris, 68; Kurt Ashe, 65; and Karl Fielitz, managed to excape trial so far because the Bel- gian authorities were una- ble to obtain their extradi- tion. All four were ranking members of the Sicherheits- dienst, the secutiry police section of the SS. Meanwhile, Dr. Adelbert Rueckerl, head of the Nazi war criminal tracing center at Ludwigsburg, West Ger- many, reported that 30 per- cent of all witnesses called to give evidence at war crimes trials refuse to do so. Addressing a Christian- Jewish Brotherhood Week meeting in Cologne, Dr. Rueckerl attributed this sit- uation to the reluctance of many Nazi victims to re- open old wounds by telling of their experiences in - court. WASHINGTON (JTA) — Sen. Charles H. Percy (R.- I11.) says he believes "the Arab leaders should convey" to Se6retary of State Henry A. Kissinger and the govern- ment of Israel "in clear and absolute terms" that the state of Israel- has the right to exist in peace and secu- rity. "Ideally, they should state it publicly," Percy said in - remarks prepared for de- livery in a radio broadcast in Chicago. Percy said that - he "frankly" does not know what the Arabs will give up in return for "substantial Israeli withdrawals," but he listed a series of 11 items which "the Arabs could do." These include dropping "the futile Arab boycott," putting Israel "literally on the map because today Is- rael does not appear on Arab maps'of the area i " and "establish limited dip- lomatic relations, very much as we have done in China, leading to full dip- lomatic recognition of Is- rael." "These are tactics," Percy said of his 11 points, that "the Arabs should take in their own interest and in the interest of peace." Percy did not name any Arab country in his remark's. United Nations;; and that as the Shah has said when Iran loads oil in tankers "we don't ask their destinatibn." Ansary emphasized that when the Six-Day War broke out, the Shah was "the first leader in the world with the demand for return of occupied territory." He said that "We accept the ex- istence of Israel at the same time that we have con- demned any country — big or small to_ take land by force."
