THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS NEW YORK — The insti- tutions of Reform Judaism have set aside the period between the Jewish holi- days of Passover (Wednesday) to Shavuot (May 16) for a major effort by congregations and indi- viduals to alleviate the "plague of world famine which now afflicts 400,- 000,000 of our fellow human beings." The 1.1 million members of Reform synagogues in the United States and Can- ada are being asked to sign P7Tte Passover pledge cards com- ....„ mitting each congregant to is duce waste of food, cut on beef, support legis- on and contribute funds and participate in other -ac- [-- tivities to alleviate world hunger. The Commission on Social Action of Reform Judaism — a joint body of both the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and the Cen- y tral Conference of Ameri- can Rabbis — mailed pledge cards to be signed by mem- bers of the movement's 715 congregations. The four-page card, "Passover Pledge of Con- science," calls upon the Reform Jew to reduce his beef intake by one-third; practice two meatless days each week; observe an additional fast day an- nually; if possible, grow fruits and vegetables at home; neuter household pets; not use fertilizer for non-food purposes, such as lawns; and to forward money saved by these acts to UAHC Hunger Head- quarters, 838 Fifth Av- enue, New York 10021, where the funds will be distributed to appropriate .agencies. Both the congregations and their members were urged to conduct educa- tional forums, hold special religious services, communi- cate with national legisla- tors to support American leadership in granting aid and development programs 'to food-deficit nations and to encourage United States participation in the creation of world food and fertilizer reserve systems, collect food and clothing for poor fami- lies in the community and adopt similar food conserva- tions practices as indicated on the pledge card. A special appeal was made to 15-16 year-old con- firmands whose graduation exercises are usually held during the religious observ- ance of Shavuot. The young people were asked to incor- porate the "mitzvot" of feed- ing the hungry and helping the needy. Youngsters were urged to participate with their par- ents at Shavuot in a na- tional Reform "Bikkurim — food awareness day" by ob- serving some of the recom- mended personal activities, NEW YORK — A recent issue of Sports Illustrated magazine described "the last of the good Jewish fighters," middleweight boxer Max Cohen. Cohen, the middleweight champion of France, is a character according to the article written by John Vin- ocur. A Morrocan Jew, his family now lives in Beer- sheba.
