A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBIS
OF THE METROPOLITAN AREA

If I am not for myself; who will be for me/
That truth is especially apparent now. Once again
Jews stand alone in the world. We read of the adversi-
ties which face our Soviet brothers who have demon-
strated courage and strength by asking to be released to
Israel. We hear of the persecution suffered by those
Jews who remain in the Islamic countries. We know
well the struggle of the Israelis as they combat inflation
and the setbacks suffered by their country's develop-
ment following the Yom Kippur War.
Who responds to help our people?
Israel has few friends in the world community._ It is
to us that she looks for support, for we have no one but
ourselves.
Others, too, watch us, gauging Israel's strength by
the success of the campaigns to aid her people and to
shore up her humanitarian programs, programs to nur-
ture, to sustain, to develop her greatest resource . . .
people. The leaders within the world community who
still speak on Israel's behalf will continue to do so only if
they see clearly that they do not stand alone. Our sup-
port, economically and in other ways, will reinforce
their stand for Israel's survival.

Should Israel, that dream for which we all have
struggled, and prayed, and sacrificed, fade from exist-
ence, the stature of Jews throughout the world will dim-
inish. If our aid does not sustain her, our own Jewish
survival will be threatened.
Israel will not win in the harsh negotiations for peace
unless she can speak from a position of strength, bol-
stered by her true friends .— all too few.

Soviet Jews may not be allowed to continue their exo-
dus if we do not continue to underwrite their courage.
When they are released, we must be ready with the
means to provide them with opportunity and freedom
from suffering, in the homeland of their choice.
It is morally incumbent that we stand united within
our own ranks. It is morally incumbent upon us that we
help, publicly and to the fullest possible extent, our
brothers who are in need here, in countries where they
are repressed, and in Israel..
Join us in support of the 1975 Allied _Jewish Cam-
paign-Israel Emergency Fund: Reaffirm by your gener-
osity the fact that we are one people!
