Passover Pilgrimages Defy Arabs;
Detroit El Al Tours Are Increasing

TEL AVIV (JTA) —
"Come and spend Passover
with us." This was the call
issued by Ashkenazic Chief
Rabbi Shlomo Goren in the
aftermath of last week's ter-
rorist attack on the Savoy
Hotel in Tel Aviv. Rabbi
Goren said a mass pilgri-
mage to Israel would be the
correct answer by world
Jewry to the attack.
He urged each commu-
nity to organize a group for
the traditional Passover pil-
grimage to Israel both as a
ulfillment of an important
mitzva and as a demonstra-
tion of solidarity with Is-
rael.
Although hotel owners
have feared a mass flight of
tourists from Israel and
cancellations of scheduled
visits, this has not material-
ized. El Al said it has not re-
ceived any cancellations of
trips to Israel while the ho-
tels themselves reported no
significant cancellations in
reservations.
Locally, Benjamin Hersh-

kovitz, manager of the De-
troit Israel El Al Israel Air-
ways • office, reported this
week that increased interest
in tourism has been in effect
here and that in spite of
Arab efforts to disrupt con-
fidence in Jewish ranks
there was not a single can-
cellation in tourist plans.
The Passover tours are ov-
erloaded, he stated. He said
that the $1 million Detroit
El Al sales of a year ago will
be exceeded and the fiscal
year ending April 30 will
show $1.5 million in tourist
sales.
He said he had arranged
for 30 group tours this year

— 25 percent of them Chris-
tian — for 1,000 visitors in
Israel, and 2,000 more trav-
eled to Israel individually.
Hershkovitz emphasized
the interest shown in El Al's
popularity by stating:
"Although Detroit was
one of the hardest hit of the
major American cities with
layoffs and unemployment,
we are very optimistic for a
good year. Not only is the
Jewish market continuing
to support Israel by flying
El Al, we have also seen a
marked increase in Chris-
tian travellers.
"Our prospects are excel-
lent for both the Jewish and
Christian markets and we
hope that things will con-
tinue on an upward trend.
Trans-Atlantic travel has
been down and of course
this has affected Israel too.
"However, in spite of the
increased airfares and eco-
nomic problems, we did in-
crease our traffic by 25 per-
cent over last year's fig-
ures."
He added that, "There are
many things that make El
Al special. First of all there
is the safety factor. Our pil-
ots are considered the best
in the world.. Secondly our
security precautions. Nowa-
days people feel that when
they choose a destination
they want to arrive there
safe and secure.
"We are also the only car-
rier flying nonstop 747
jumbo jets both ways. That
means only 91/2 hours flying
time from New York."
Hershkovitz said that by
traveling El Al one gives
Israel the moral and eco-
nomic support upon which
her existence depends.
Meanwhile, the U.S. State
Department is warning visi-
tors to Middle Eastern coun-
tries to make Israel their
last stop if they intend to
visit Arab countries. This is
because the Arab nations
are refusing to admit travel-
ers with Israeli visas on
their passports.
In Amsterdam, a spokes-
man for KLM, the Dutch
National Airline, has denied
that the airline had prom-
ised to cease promoting
tours to Israel. Responding
to a statement issued earlier
by the director general of
the Arab Boycott Office in
Damascus, the KLM spokes-
man said the only promise
made to the Arabs was not
to include the occupied ter-
ritories in KLM travel fold-
ers on tourism in Israel.
