Jewish News Special

Editor, The Jewish News:

Promoted by a genuine
belief in Baroness Gait-
skell's sense of fairness and
justice I submitted the ma-
ligning definitions of "Jew"
in the Oxford dictionaries
for her consideration in the
hope that she would be
moved to start a bill in the
House of Lords which would
remedy this grievous injus-
tice to Jewry.
I have received the follow-
ing reply: "Thank you for
your letter of Jan. 30th.
have once again looked up
the definition of 'Jew' in the
Oxford dictionary and I
share your disgust. How-
ever, I am totally against in-
troducing a Bill in the
House of Lords on the lines
you suggest for . more than
one reason.

"I do not think this kind
of motion warrants a Bill,
and I think the plight of Is-
rael in the world today is far
too serious, and even dan-
gerous, to concentrate on
such a trivial matter. It
would get little sympathy
and by the publicity—would
be counter-productive.

streets and the seashore'
were full of people singing
and dancing.
The Histadrut arranged a
seder in the Mugrabi Hall in
Tel Aviv. There were 1,000
guests - present, amongst
them artists, high British
officials and cultural func-
tionaries. The Seder was fol-
lowed by an art and musical
program in which artists of
"Habima" and Ohel" took
part. The crowd filled the
Mugrabi house:and danced
during the night.
In Jerusalem the Wailing •
Wall was strongly guarded
by police-patrols as thou-
sands prayed. There were
only a few tourists in Jeru-
salem owing to the clashes
with the Arab terrorists,
but the King David Hotel
held a festive -Seder for
them. Another public Seder
for foreigners was held in
the Menora Club.
Even the attacks of the
Arab terrorists, which
caused many Jewish vic-
tims, could not interfere
with the festive Seder at-
mosphere all over the coun-
try.

against Israeli construction
on the Jerusalem-Bethle-
hem road and in the city of
