Luvr Copyright 1975, JTA, Inc.) HOLLYWOOD — Goldie Hawn, a nice Jewish girl from Washington, D. C.. who made her debut in tele- vision's "Laugh-In" and won an Academy Award for her first feature screen role, "Cactus Flower," renders an honest, down-to-earth per- formance as a precocious youngster in the current Warren Beatty movie, "Shampoo," looking like a 17-year-old, though she is past 29. "Shampoo" is a chronol- ogy of decadence in today's society and a unique sum- mary of obscenities reflect- ing the complete breakdown of morality among the idle rich and their hangers-on in Hollywood and elsewhere. Warren Beatty, the star, tri- ples as co-author and produ- cer, and portrays the central character of a Beverly Hills beautician. There are two fine per-: formers in "Shampoo" who also happen to be Jewish, Jack Warden and Lee Grant, who appear as hus- band and wife constantly at each other's throats, some- how as a grim reminder not to get married. "The Man in the Glass Booth," Robert Shaw's controversial drama, has been transposed to the screen by Edward Anhalt for Ely Landau's Ameri- can Film Theater sub- scription series. Shaw, evidently unhappy with the adaptation, has with- drawn his name from the motion picture. Israel, Not Fear Is Source of `Jewish Politics' The views of Stephen Isaacs, author of the contro- versial "Jews and American Politics," and speaker last week at Cong. Shaarey Ze- dek, were disputed in a re- cent article in the Wall Street Journal. Prof. Nathan Glazer of Harvard University refuted Isaacs' claim that fear for their safety and position in American society is respon- sible for Jewish liberalism. Glazer said, "Fear does play a role in Jewish politi- cal behavior, but it is not fear over threats to Jews in the United States, it is fear for Israel. "There is no parallel to Israel for any other Ameri- can religious or ethnic group: and thus there can be no parallel to the politi- cal activity called forth by the permanent and in- creasing danger of Israel. He added, "Most modern Jews have wanted to be like all other peoples, and the creation of Israel was ironi- cally expected to be one great step in this direction. "Israel is not, alas, like all other nations; and as long as this is true, the Jews of the United States cannot be like other religious and ethnic groups, whatever their ear- nest desires." The play as well as the subsequent movie opens up a series of pertinent ques- tions about the Jews of Eu- rope, the attitude of the German people, the nature of the Hitler regime, and the validity of trials for crimes against humanity. Arthur Goldman, por- trayed with insane fury by Maximilian Schell, perhaps is a former Nazi hiding un- der a Jewish facade, a camp guard driven by a complex of guilt, or a Jewish survivor hunted by hallucinations trying to redeem humanity by posing as one of his tor- mentors. A symbol for man's suffering throughout the ages, he tries to nail himself to a cross, a sacrif- ice for the sake of eternal truth. He thereby differs from the genuine Nazi who neither would admit his participation nor even knowledge of crimes. In a higher sense, Gold- man reaffirms the scope of the monstrous crime, a crime of genocide beyond comprehension. The schizo- phrenic personality of Gold- man is a feast for any ambi- tious performer, and Maximilian Schell plays the part to the hilt, whether he appears as a financial wiz- ard in upper Manhattan, as a concentration camp com- mander emerging from the twilight of the past, or as a tortured, self-torturing Jew, rendering a constantly shifting and changing por- trayal, with his voice chang- ing from the New York ni- gun, to Yiddish, or the German mountain slang of Adolf Hitler. presents Arkin as Benito Vasquez, Chicano partner of tough and opportunistic cop Freebie Waters portrayed by James Caan (who gave a Unfortunately, director magnificent performance in Arthur Hiller (who gave "The Gambler"). us a masterpiece with "Rafferty and the Gold "Love Story") cannot cope Dust Twins" is another with the subject matter.
