6 Friday, March 7, 1975 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Zeitlin marks 50 Years With Dropsie University Faculty PHILADELPHIA — A. record of teaching contin- uously 50 years — without ever missing a single class in all that time and in all kinds of weather — will be marked this month at The Dropsie University here by Dr. Solomon - Zeitlin, distin- guished professor of post- biblical literature and insti- tutions. A world-renowned scholar and the author of many scholarly works that have become best-sellers with the public, Dr. Zeitlin first came to Dropsie GO years ago in 1915, upon his graduation from the Ecole Rabbinique in Paris. It was in 1925 that he re- turned to the post-graduate institution and first joined the faculty to teach the his- tory of the Second Jewish Commonwealth and Tal- mud Babli — courses of study which he still con- ducts today. During his tenure, Dr. Zeitlin was for 30 years ed- itor-in-chief of the "Jewish Quarterly Re- view," at publication of Dropsie University, which he guided editorially to become the outstanding scholarly magazine in the world published in the English language. He is presently chairman of the publication's editorial board. Dr. Zeitlin also is editor- in-chief of the Jewish Apo- cryphal Literature series, of which seven volumes have already been published by Dropsie University. A pro- lific writer with several hundred books and articles to his credit, all his writings are now being published in a new encyclopedic work by Ktav Publishing House, New York. A fourth volinne is forth- coming on his writings on Jewish history, religion and other related subjects which have appeared in various publications during the past 50 years, and his works are expected to take two addi- tional encyclopedic volumes before completion. Over the years, students PhD degree from Dropsie in 1917, and today is the in- stitution's oldest living alumnus. The university bestowed upon him an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws in 1957, and in 1970 honored him again with a Presidential Cita- tion. Last year, he was honored by his peers by being inducted as a Fellow in the Jewish Academy of Arts and Sciences. On his 80th birthday a few years ago, he was hon- ored by the academic world with the publication of a special volume, "Solomon Zeitlin, Scholar Laureate," an annotated bibliography of his most important works. The book opens with a foreword by the late Zal- man Shazar, who was presi- dent of Israel and Dr. Zei- tlin's roommate in 1908 when they were students at the. Baron David Gunzburg Academy for Jewish and Oriental Studies in St. Pe- tersburg (Leningrad). They remained life-long friends since their youth. SOLOMON ZEITLIN have come from the world over to study with Dr. Zei- tlin. Dr. Abraham I. Katsh, the president of Dropsie University, is among the many renowned scholars and university professors who were among his stu- dents. The 52-year-old business executive and former civil servant was informed that he was under arrest after he was summoned to police headquarters for further questioning in connection with the allegations against him. The order to take Tzur into custody was telephoned from police headquarters in Jerusalem where an investi- gation of his activities is also under way. According to Israeli law, police may detain a suspect for 48 hours after which he must be remanded before a mag- istrate. Tzur was forced to re- sign from the Israel Corp. and the Zim Lines last year after it was charged that he had invested large sums of money belonging to those firms in enter- prises headed by his friend and business associate, financier Tibor Rosen- baum.
