Gaza-Refugees Reported Living Better

By MOSHE RON

Jewish News Special
Israel Correspondent

The editors of the Israeli
press, who visited Gaza re-
cently, were surprised to
find how little they knew
about the great activity of
the Israeli government to
solve the problems of the
thousands of Arab refugees
who are concentrated in the
camps.

• It is generally known that
the Arab leaders make
propaganda of the situation
of the Arab refugees in Is-
rael.

In the Gaza district,
which had been occupied by
the Israeli Forces in June
19;7, 163,000 refugees are
living in several camps. The
Israeli authorities are con-
stantly active to improve
their living conditions and
standard of life. If the Arab
leaders would act in• the
same way, there would not
have existed an Arab refu-
gee problem for a long time.
But they prefer to use the
poor refugees as political
propaganda instruments
against Israel, and extricate
huge sums of money from
the UN for refugees.
During the last years of
the Egyptian regime in the
Gaza district (before the
Six-Day War) there were
2,000 private cars. Now
there are more than 8,000.
We could see during our
visit hundreds of TV an-
tennas and in many houses
a-nd barracks we found
electrical washing ma-
chines.
The Israeli authorities
enable students from the
district to study in neigh-
boring Arab countries.
There are today 120 young
physicians in the district,
who have finished their

studies in Egypt and are
practicing in Gaza hospi-
tals.
The number of refugees
in the Gaza district who get
help from the UN is much
smaller than given in offi-
cial publications. Many
thousands have ceased to be
refugees. They are em-
ployed by the Israeli author-
ities but still apply for UN
help. Many widows still ask
aid for deceased husbands
and children.
Years ago the Israeli secu-
rity authorities started a
special action to tear down
barracks and require inhab-
itants to move to personal
houses, which were built by
the Israeli authorities near
the camps.
This helped the refu-
gees, and aided in secu-
rity. The Zahal patrols
were unable to move in the
narrow paths of the
camps. Terrorists made
use of this situation and
shot at the patrols.
In the beginning of the
compulsory moving of refu-
gees from barracks to per-
manent houses, they pro-
tested. They were afraid
that they would lose their
privileges as refugees and
the UN help. They were in-
cited by extremists not to
leave their barracks.
But they became con-
vinced that life was easier
and more comfortable un-
der their new housing condi-
tions and that they would
not forfeit their rights as

refugees. Thousands applied

First Settlement of Jews in China

The first settlement of Jews
in China took place in the first
century of the current era, and
those people were known to the
Chinese as "the pluckers-out of
the sinew," because of their
adherence to the Jewish law
based on the biblical story in

Genesis XXXII, 33, when the
Angel with whom Jacob wres-
tled struck him on the leg and
caused a sinew to shrink. This
sinew (the sciatic nerve) has to
be removed from slaughtered
cattle before the meat may be
eaten.

Author Declares
`Dual Loyalty'
at JNF Dinner

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Louis Nizer, the author and
lawyer who received the
Jewish National Fund's an-
nual Maccabean Award,
declared that he had - never
been bothered by the prob-
lem of dual loyalty.
Addressing some 750 per-
sons at the Waldorf Astoria
where the JNF held its an-
nual award's dinner, Nizer
said he agreed with the late
Supreme Court Justice
Louis Brandeis that to be a
good American one must
also be a good Jew. Nizer
said he never felt any con-
flict between his devotion to
the United States and to the
state of Israel.
Meyer Pesin, JNF presi-
dent, who presented Nizer
with the award, announced
that the JNF is also estab-
lishing the Louis and
Mildred Nizer Forest in the
John F. Kennedy Peace For-
est outside Jerusalem.
Otto Preminger, the
movie producer, who was
honorary chairman of the
dinner event, was presented
with the JNF's 70th anniver-
sary medal.
