Modern packaging is no inno-
vation. The Talmud frequently
mentions vessels of glass; in the
Targum to Jeremiah XXXII, 11
and 14, we read of wrapping
and sealing in tinfoil; Targum
II to Esther I, 3, speaks of a
tube containing eye-paint. They
did not know of vacuum-pack-
ing, but in Kelim X, 5 and To-
sefta Baba Kama VII, 7, they
tell of a vessel sealed by con-
necting the paste with the rim,
leaving air-space between the
cover and the vessel.

The Middle .. .

PHILADELPHIA — The
president of the American
Jewish Congress National
Women's Division called on
the nation's volunteers to
fill the gap created in social
services by budget cutbacks
resulting from the reces-
sion.
In an address to 400 AJ
Congress women at their
national convention in the
Bellevue Stratford Hotel,
Jacqueline K. Levine of
West Orange, N.J. said she
was "not suggesting that
unpaid volunteers compete
with the unemployed for
paying jobs, but that they
make their skills and serv-
ices available when eco-
nomic considerations have
eliminated essential serv-
ices."

She challenged the view of
the National Organization
of Women (NOW) in oppos-
ing voluntary service, as-
serting that this attitude
represented "a new kind of
thought control."
