Bar-Ilan U Acquires Computer

TEL AVIV — Bar-Ilan,
Israel's only religiously-or-
iented university, has ac-
quired one of the world's
largest computers to help
solve both religious and
scientific problems.
The computer will enable
the university to complete
its indexing of the Responsa
literature, a 1,500-year-old
compilation of Jewish case
law, conduct chemical ex-
periments without even hav-
ing to enter the laboratory,
give medical diagnosis with-
out the computer seeing the
patient and conduct meteo-
rological research without
sticking its nose outdoors.
In compiling Jewish case
law, the computer will ena-
ble Jewish scholars, as well
as religious court judges
and attorneys to get imme-
diate response to questions
on marriage, divorce, debts,
communal affairs and-much
more.
In order to cope with the
problems of Israel's brain-
injured war veterans, a
new rehabilitation pro-
gram has been launched
jointly by Bar-Ilan and the
Ministry of Defense. The
project, the first of its kind
in Israel, operates out of a
special rehabilitation cen-
ter in Tel Aviv under the
direction of the depart-
ment of psychology at I_ '-
Ilan.
The project's principal
object is to improve the vet-
eran's physical, mental, so-
cial, familial and communal
functioning which had been
impaired. The project has
been set up essentially as a
workshop where the veter-
ans are - engaged in various
types of work geared to
their abilities, mainly as-
sembly line occupations,
ranging from easy to com-
plicated tasks.
In other university news,
Yehoshua Schachter, pro-
fessor of chemistry, has de-
veloped a new method for
producing special petrole-
um-based gases from oil-
bearing rock (shale) which
will help overcome the sky-
rocketing costs of chemical
fertilizers and plastics, re-
sulting from soaring oil
prices.
Of particular benefit will
be the production of fertiliz-
ers at a price which even the
developing food-short coun-
tries can afford.
According to Prof. Eli-
yahu Kanovsky, of the de-
partment of economics at
Bar-Ilan University, to the
extent that military power
is based on economic
power, Israel has little to
worry about from its Arab
neighbors in the forseeable
future. Not only is Israel's
economy ahead of its Arab
neighbors in every respect,
but the gap has been wid-
ening in its favor and is
likely to widen further in
the future.
Prof. Kanovsky has spe-
cialized during most of his
academic career in the econ-
omies of the Middle East.
Among his publications is a
four-part study sponsored
by a Harvard grant, on the
"Economies of Israel, the
Administered Territories,
Egypt and Jordan Following
the Six Day War", and re-
cently completed studies of

the Jordanian and Iraqi
economies as part of a team
project analyzing the "Ec-
onomic Consequences of
Peace in the Middle East."
Meanwhile, two students
of psychology at Bar-Ilan
University beginning with
the basic psychological as-
sumption that most adult
fears begin around the ages
of four to six, selected a
group of children these ages
whose parents confirmed
that their youngsters feared
bugs.
The first thing noted by
the students, Vivian Fli-
man, originally from
South America and Yair
Einat, a native Israeli,
was that girls outnum-
bered boys four to one.
While this did not consti-
tute sufficient statistical
proof, it nevertheless was
a first indication of the
commonly observed phe-
nomenon that women fear
bugs more than men.
Next, the investigators
discovered that by proper
adult example, accompanied
by cautious experimenting
by the children themselves,
their fears were considera-
bly reduced, enabling them'
to get into much closer and
eventual physical contact
with the bugs.

Hire yourself out to a
work which is beneath you
rather than become depend-
ent on others.
