Israelis Remove Illegal Settlers

Wines Approved for Passover Despite Doubts

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The ruling by Sephardic
Chief Rabbi Ovadia Yosef
that Israeli wines are per-
missible for Passover use
despite certain doubts re- '
cently cast on their kashrut,
appeared to be unchal-

lenged, much to the relief of
the country's leading vint-
ners who have already ex-
ported thousands of cases of
wines and grape juice la-
beled "Kosher L'Pesach."
The Chief Rabbinate
Council, at a meeting in Tel
Aviv last week, did not ban
the wines produced by Car-
mel Mizrachi, Eliaz and
other firms, but stated that
the Council would not be
responsible for their kash-
rut.
Yosef supporters attri-
bited the slight to Ashkena-
zic Chief Rabbi Shlomo
Goren who is perpetually
feuding with his Sephardic
counterpart. Neither of the
chief rabbis attended the
council meeting at which
they normally serve as co-
chairmen.
The doubts arose some
weeks ago when it was al-

leged that certain wineries
used starch, a leavened
(hametz) substance in-
stead of fruit in the fer-
mentation process which
would have rendered the
wines unusuable for Pas-
sover.
Rabbi Yosef said his in-
vestigation disclosed that
the starch was not used in
the wines but in other bever-
age products and that the
machinery had not been
cleaned between uses.
He ruled in consultation
with other rabbis that suffi-
cient time had elapsed be-
tween the use of the machi-
nery to remove any doubt
about the kashrut of the
wines. However, Rabbi
Yosef cautioned observant
Jews not to consume liquors
and other liquor products
produced by the wineries
this Passover.

NEW YORK (ZINS) —
The Arab propaganda ma-
chine, -powered by oil rev-
enues, is picking up speed
and a contribution by Jews.

At the UN reception tend-
ered to Yasir Arafat there
were Rabbi Elmer Berger
and Alfred Lilienthal repre-
senting the "American
Council for Judaism". They
embraced the terrorist
chieftan and congratulated
him on his "historic ad-
dress".

In England, editor Ronald
Segal of the "Penguin" pub-
lishing house, issues a book
authored by Maxim Gilon
(an Israeli) entitled, "How
Jews Have Lost Their
Souls", a diatribe against
the Jewish state. Mapam's
head in England, Sony Mar-
cus, publishes an article in
Jewish Observer and Middle
East Review (a journal fi-
nanced by the World Zionist
Organization), in which he
calls for acceptance of a
Palestinian state.

Israelis Training
on U.S. Missiles

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
The Pentagon said Wednes-
day that 80 Israeli soldiers
are being trained in the U.S.
to operate the 70-mile range
Lance ground-to-ground
missile but an Army spokes-
man declined to confirm
reports that the U.S. has
agreed to sell up to 200 of
the missiles to Israel. Israel
has long sought the lance,
one of the newest American
weapons, but was turned
down as recently as a year
ago.

According to the spokes-
man, 57 Israeli soldiers are
undergoing a 15-week train-
ing course at Fort Sill, Okla.
The rest are training at the
Abderdeen Proving
Grounds in Maryland and at
the Anniston Army Depot
and the Red Stone Arsenal
in Alabama. The lance mis-
sile has been developed with
both nuclear and conven-
tional warheads.

BONN — In her New
Year speech, Frau Anne-
marie Renger, president of
the Bundestag, strongly
criticized the United Na-
tions for the attitude it
adopted in the Middle East
conflict.
She called for trans-fron-
tier solidarity in the face of
terrorism and accused the
United Nations of showing
contempt for moral stand-
ards by allowing PLO leader
Arafat to address the Gen-
eral Assembly. "When the
United Nations", she said,
"receives an Arafat with an
ovation but leave the As-
sembly when the Israel rep-
resentative speaks then that
is very bad sign for us."
She also emphasized that
in spite of all the economic
interest in the Arab coun-
tries, no one in the Federal
Republic should tamper
with Israel's right to exist.
