Passover Laws Defined

A Jew is forbidden to have
any leavening or leavening
products in his home during
Passover week.
The Bible (Exodus 12:17)
expressly forbids this. Some
commentaries indicate that
this represents the Exodus
from Egypt in the sense
that the Jews left in such a
hurry they could not wait
for the dough in their bread
to be leavened. Others claim
that one might be tempted
to eat leavening or leavened
products if they were to be
found in the home.
In addition, leavening has
een considered symbolic of
ndesirable traits. Some
say that it represents a
sense of pride and haughti-
ness because it makes the
dough rise and inflates it to
a larger size than it_really is.
During Passover, a Jew
should be humble enough to
remember that his ances-
tors were once slaves in
Egypt.

Others say that the leav-
ening has a souring effect
and, this, represents a
sense of antagonism and
revenge. There are some
who claim that leavening
represents stern judgment
and a Jew understands
that judgment must be
tempered with mercy.

A roasted egg is always
placed on the Seder plate on
Passover. Some claim that
this represented the general
festival sacrifice which was
roasted.
Others claim that the
shape of the egg, which is
round and which represents
eternity, caused it to be
used on the Seder plate.
Such an egg is eaten by
mourners.

sents Israel. during the
Passover holiday with the
revival of ancient biblical
customs blended with mod-
ern elements.
The filmstrip includes
picturesque sequences from
the Passover seder as cele-
brated by Bucharian, Dur-
distani and Yemenite Jews
— and even views of the
Samaritan sect. Many of
these slides appear in the
unique Israel Haggada for
Passover prepared by au-
thor, Meyer Levin, who was
