Syria Jews Tremble
In State of Terror

(Continued from Page 1)
According to Solarz,
Assad replied negatively
and said that no member of
the Jewish community
would be granted permis-
sion to leave Syria, explain-
ing that if Syria permitted
emigration of Jews, Syria
would not be in a position to
put pressure on the Soviet
Union not to permit emigra-
tion of Soviet Jews to Israel.
Solarz, who is the first
Jewish congressman to
meet with Assad, said that
only after the Syrian presi-
dent personally intervened,
was he allowed to tour the
Jewish ghetto in Damascus
and to attend services at
Frange Synagogue there.
The Congressman said that
throughout his visit to the
Jewish ghetto, he was ac-
companied by three Syrian
government officials.
He said that while he was
in the synagogue, none of

the 16 men participating in
the services approached
him. He said that because of
the presence of the Syrian
officials, he did not ap-
proach any of the worship-
pers or ask them any ques-
tions.
Referring to a recent
program in the CBS-TV net-
work in which Syrian Jews
were interviewed by Mike
Wallace, Solarz said that
Wallace did not "have the
sensitivity to the delicacy of
the position" of those inter-
,viewed, who were sur-
rounded by Syrian officials.

Waxman added that
"the vehemence of his
(Faisal's) remarks left no
doubt in my mind that the
distinction he sometimes
makes between Jews and
Zionists is an academic
one so far as Saudi Arabia
is concerned."

However, Waxman said it
his letter, while he was in
the Middle East, his staff
discovered that all Jewish
visa applications are for-
warded to the Saudian For-
eign Ministry and that
"some Jews, almost exclu-
sively ranking government
and corporate persons, are
admitted." He added, "My
staff also discovered that
our government rarely takes
issue with the Saudis."

Congressman Denied Entry;
King Faisal Vehement at Jews

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-
Calif.), who was refused a
visa to enter Saudi Arabia
as a member of an official
congressional mission be-
cause he is Jewish, has
called on Secretary of State
Henry A. Kissinger to
"personally review and re-
port" on the U.S. govern-
ment's position toward
Saudi Arabia's visa pblicies.
In a letter to Kissinger
the 35-year-old freshman
congressman charged that
the U.S. government, mili-
tary and business communi-
ties all excluded Jews from
Saudi Arabian assignments
in a policy of "appeasement
and complacency" - toward
anti-Jewish discrimination.
Waxman eventually ac-
companied the House
Armed Services Commit - -
tee's fact-finding mission to
Saudi Arabia Feb. 7-17 after
the State Department sent
an urgent cable to the
American Embassy in Riad
to obtain a visa for him.
In his letter to Kissin-
ger, Waxman observed:
"It is my unfortunate con-
clusion that had I not been
a congressman, my re-
quest to visit Saudi Arabia
would have been denied
and that the State Depart-
ment would not have inter-
vened on my behalf."
Waxman's letter to Kis-
singer reported on the fact-
finding mission's interview
with King Faisal of -Saudi
Arabia.
Waxman said that when
he asked the monarch about
his country's anti-Jewish
policies, "he told us openly
and publicly that there is no
room for a Jewish homeland

He has been on important
missions to Israel with UJA
and local leaders and has
helped advance campaign
activities here and in other
communities in professional
divisions.
Dr. Fill was honored two
years ago by the Detroit
Friends of Bar-Ilan Univer-
sity.
