Donin, Advice on Child Raising

"Too many people ask when it
is too late, 'Where have we gone
wrong,'" said Rabbi Hayim
Donin at the annual Joe Benz
Memorial Lecture Monday eve-
ning of the Metropolitan Coun-
cil of Young Israel.
The former spiritual leader of
Cong. Bnai David, Rabbi Donin
has been in the U.B. for the past
three weeks completing a book
tentatively entitled "To Raise a
Jew." He and his family imi-
grated to Israel at the time of
the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
Rabbi Donin said his new
book, which is expected to be
published by the end of the
year, deals with raising a child
in America. His talk at Young
Israel of Oak-Woods Monday
dealt with religious guidelines
in raising children.

Christian Cites Israeli Respect, Arab. Abuse of Holy Places

By
THE REV.
CLAUDE DUVERNOY, D.D.

JERUSALEM—
Sir, may I ask you to spare a
few moments to read this letter
from an Israeli Christian theolo-
gian who has been living in Jeru-
salem since 1962 and for whom the
recent happenings at the UN Gen-
eral Assembly have been even
more appalling than the con-
temptible Munich diplomacy of
1938.
It is quite clear that Arafat and
Co. would not have enjoyed such a
monstrous success had they not
murdered women and children, hi-
jacked and destroyed civilian air-
craft, lad they not practiced that
most lad of crimes: the
murder of hostages.
In short, crime does pay at the
so-called United Nations.
Anti-Semitism, too. For it is
sheer anti-Semitism to proclaim,

for instance, that the Jews are
desecrating the beauty and char-
acter of Jerusalem, their biblical
capital. It is sheer anti-Semitism
to assert that they are harming
Christian and Moslem institutions
and interests. It is only since June
1967 that the three Abrahamic re-
ligions are for the first time enjoy-
ing equality of respect and rights,
with free access to all the Holy
Places.
Look around this 'ancient city
while you are here, sir, and see for
yourself. What mars her beauty?
The reconstruction of the Jewish
Quarter fully respects the charac-
ter and beauty of the Old City.

But when the Jewish Quarter
was destroyed by the Arab Le-
gion, after the 1948 fighting, not a
single voice of protest was raised
by diplomats, Church leaders or
UN personnel. All the synagogues
of the quarter were razed and

Weisgal Calls for Answer
to Arabs Propaganda Attacks

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Meyer
Weisgal, chancellor of the Weiz-
mann Institute of Science and the
man who was a close confidant of
Dr. Chaim Weizmann, has issued
an urgent call to "the government,
the Jewish Agency, banks, other
institutions and individuals" in
Israel and abroad to raise a $10,-
000,000 fund for what he called an
"Operation Truth."
He described it as a massive in-
formation campaign to enlighten
world public opinion as to the
truths of the Israel-Arab conflict
and the tenets of Zionism.

"The eyes of the world must be
opened once and for all to the bra-
zen lies of the Arab propagandists
and their cohorts inside and out-
side the UN."
Weisgal contended that the gov-

ernment and Jewish Agency had
been "remiss" in their duty "by
not methodically revealing Arab
mendacity and prevarications.
Jews are the best public relations
men for other peoples' causes but
"fail to live up to that reputation
for themselves," Weisgal claimed.
He said he would be ready to
give $10,000 personally to such a
fund should it be set up.
Pastor Duvernoy's letter to the
Jerusalem Post, which stressed
these points ought to he run as an
advertisement in every leading
newspaper in the West, Weisgal
recommended. In Israel, too, "the
young generation—and I say this
more in sorrow than in anger—are
being fed with lies, fraud, distor-
tions and obfuscations of the his-
torical truths of this area," Weis-
gal claimed.

turned into stables for donkeys.
No one protested.

Who is desecrating the Old City
today? I would ask you to go and
look at the marvelous Golden
Gate, which means so much to
Jews and Christians alike, and see
how the Moslem authorities have
turned it into the junkyard of the
Mosque.
To suggest that archeological
excavations along the Wall are
being carried out in order to de-
stroy the places holy to Islam is
lunacy. But that is what UNESCO
has decided.

There is in Jerusalem a beauti-
ful garden, with a unique tomb—
the Hill of Golgotha venerated by
the entire Protestant world. Un-
der the Hashemite regime, this

hallowed ground was desecrated
by the construction of a bus sta-
tion. Who cared? Who protested?
A few days ago, some 40 nations
had the elementary courage and
dignity to refrain from supporting
the' murderous claims of the Ara-
fat-Faisal-Qaddafi-Amin gang.
May I humbly suggest that these
same democracies quit the
"Manhattan Circus," establish
themselves in less polluted sur-
roundings and leave the murder-
ers and their backers to them-
selves.
You could take the initiative in
this, Dr. Waldheim, or at least
resign. As an Austrian, you can-
not possibly wish to remain with
an institution which bows to the
orders and desires of the heirs of
the Nazis.

`Arafat United the Israelis'
Dr. Hertz Tells Clergymen

"Arafat succeeded in uniting
the Israeli people as never be-
fore when he spoke at the UN,"
declared Dr. Richard C. Hertz,
Senior Rabbi of Temple Beth
El, before 300 Catholic and Pro-
testant clergymen at the B.
Benedict Glazer Institute on Ju-
daism meeting at Temple Beth
El Monday.
Subtituting for the sched-
uled speaker Rabbi Walter Ja-
cob who was unable to come to
Detroit, Rabbi Hertz spoke to
the priests and ministers for 75
minutes on Israel and the Pa-
lestinian problem.
"The Israeli people are deter-
mined to survive. They don't
want to be like Samson pulling
the whole world down around
them. Thoy know that another
war may bring victory but no
peace.
"Only a political and diplo-
matic settlement can provide
the conditions for peace and
this means negotiations.
Egypt has the most to gain
among the Arab nations by
making peace with Israel. But
is Sadat ready to risk peace?"

Describing the refugee camp.-
he visited on a recent mission tc
the Middle East, Rabbi Hert
said, "It was the shattering de.
feat of Egypt and Syria in the
'67 war that was probably the;
most important event in the
history of the Palestinian revo•.
lution. Unable to defeat Israel
the only alternative left to the
Palestinians was the one ad ,
vanced by El Fatah."
Rabbi Hertz reported on hiF
visit with Prime Minster of
Lebanon Rasheed el Solh whc
complained about Israeli planes.
and bombs against innocent
refugees in the camps but sak
nothing about a government
policy permitting the . use of
Lebanese soil for training
ground of the terrorists.
Rabbi Hertz also described
his meeting with Arafat's
brother, Dr. Fathi Arafat, at
PLO headquarters in Beirut. A
physician who has given up his
practice to direct the Palesti-
nian Red Crescent, Dr. Arafat
talked about his famous
brother and the way the PLO is
responding to the Israeli repris-
als for terrorist raids.
