Heroine Hannah Senesh

insanity. An expose such as
"Hearts and Minds" must
have a sobering influence on
those who delude themselves
with the concept of knights in
shining armor rushing to the
defense of the wretched and
oppressed.

Hannah Senesh, the Hungar-
ian-born Jewish heroine who
sacrificed 'her life during World
War II vainly trying to free one
million Jews trapped by the Na-
zis in her native country, will
appear on the screen in a mo-
tion picture to be produced by
First Artists Productions, the
company owned by stars Bar-
bra Streisand, Paul Newman,
Sidney Poitier, Dustin Hoff-
man and Steve McQueen.

Each one of the film stars has
been making pictures independ-
ently through First Artists for
Warner Bros. release. The Han-
nah Senesh epic, however, is
being contemplated as an NBC
"Movie of the Week" to pre-
miere as a network TV show.

Phil Feldman, First Artists
president and a motion picture
attorney with 20 years of indus-
try experience, has been asso-
ciated with the production of
such films as "The Wild
Bunch," "The Way We Were,"
"For Pete's Sake," Summer
Wishes, Winter Dreams." He
started his Hollywood career as
producer of Franics Ford Cop-
pola's very first directorial
chore, "You're A Big Boy Now,"
in 1967. Feldman made a brief
screen appearance in Coppola's
"Godfather II," as a U. S. Sena-
tor on the crime investigating
committee.

Feldman says Dustin Hoff-
man will complete his first
starring feature for "First
Artists" within a few months,
based"on the autobiographical
book by Edmund. Bunker
about an ex-convict trying to
adapt himself to society,
somehow an extension of the
character portrayed by Hoff-

man in "Papillon" a couple of
years ago.

Feldman also announces a
new Barbra Streisand film,
"Gift Shop," based on the sus-
pense novel by Charlotte Arm-
strong, with Robert Benton, co-
author of the screenplay. David
Newman is being considered as
the director. Ms. Streisand,
meanwhile, is completing pre-
production on the streamlined
version of "A Star Is Born," the
second re-make of the yarn,
thereby following in the foot-
steps of Janet Gaynor and Judy
Garland.

theatrically by Warner Bros.
and has been selected for Aca-
demy Award nomination.

Walt Rostow, national secu-
rity advisor to the late Presi-
dent Lyndon Johnson, claims
that a selected portion, out of
context, was included in the
documentary film footage
somehow as a counterpoint to
the visual story. However, War;
ner Bros. decided to go ahead
with the release and with the
entry for "Oscar" consideration.

Zero Mostel completed a mo-
tion picture in Mexico, "Once
Upon A Scoundrel," a satirical
comedy in which he portrays a
greasy land baron who tries to
seduce a young girl about to be
married to a servant. The con-
temporary yarn by Rip Van
Ronkel resembles Beaumar-
chais' immortal "Marriage of
Figaro," which castigated the
nobleman's "right for the first
night," and sparked the French
Revolution.

Peter Lorre, Jr. portrays the
male lead in "Sons of Sassoun,"
dealing with the plight of home-
less Armenians, recently com-
pleted at the Goldwyn Studios.
Son of the famed continental
character actor, the younger
Lorre was born in Germany
shortly after his father fled the
country in 1933. There is noth-
ing sinister about Lorre, Jr.,
who has appeared in numerous
TV films and made his feature
debut in Alfred Hitchcock's
"Torn Curtain."

within 24 years, with the hope
that 25,000 people from the U.S.
and Canada will immigrate to
Israel per year.
- In a letter addressed to Pin-
has Sapir, WZO chairman, Is-
rael's Premier Yitzhak Rabin
said:

"Aliya is the lifeblood of the
Jewish state. The story of the
rebirth and building of Israel
one of its chapters. It must be
made a larger one because of
what immigrants from the
West can contribute to Israel
and because of what Israel
can contribute to them.

More than 3,000 meetings
will be conducted during "Aliya
Month" by the regional Israel
Aliya centers . in the U.S. and
Canada. Every major Jewish or-
ganization and all three reli-
gious movements, have already
pledged their cooperation with
the centers during "Aliya
Month."

Mrs. Victor Ross, left, is shown with Yaacov Keinan, con-
sul for press and information of the Israeli Consulate in Chi-
cago, and Mrs. Gerald E. Goldberg at the recent Pioneer Wom-
en's brunch for the Histadrut Campaign. Mrs. Ross is president
of Pioneer Women and Mrs, Goldberg is secretary of the Cam-
paign.

NEW YORK — Abie Nathan,
peace ship commander, is on a
hunger strike to raise funds for
his floating radio station.
Nathan, who broadcasts mu-
sic, talk shows and peace mes-
sages to both Arabs and Israe-
lis, has limited his diet to water
and tea.
Stranded in Marseilles,
France, Nathan said he would
continue his fast, begun Jan. 19,
