The tefilin are placed on the
arm first before they are placed
on the head.'
This is the order mentioned
in the Book of Deuteronomy
where the scriptures write, "It

agents leading to sin are the
seeing eyes, the desiring heart
and the arm which acts. Since
placing the tefilin on the arm
covers two of these because the
left arm is near the heart — the
arm is given preference. This
would indicate that the purpose
.'t
for the tefilin is to guard man
from committing evil. If man

ing his heart's desires and using
his arms to achieve all of these,
he would be safeguarded from
the eventuality of wrong-doing.
In this respect, tying the tefilin
around the arm and around the
head indicates a symbol of con-
trol. Consequently, man is
guided in his vision, in this feel-
ing, and in his actions through
the tefilin.
The portions from the scrip-
ture are inscribed inside the te-
filin which is placed -'on the
hand all contained in one scroll,
while the portions contained in
the tefilin placed on the head
are inscribed in four scrolls.
Many commentaries claim
that man is allowed in luxury of

MR. AND MRS. PETER WEISBERG
Mr. and Mrs. Peter Weisberg,
active in many Jewish causes,
and staunch supporters of Is-
rael, are planting' a forest of a
minimum of 10,000 trees on a
Jewish National Fund tract in
Israel. Known as the Peter and
Clara Weisberg Forest, it will
be located in the United Syn-
agogue of America ForeSt at
Sanhedria near Jerusalem.
Weisberg is chairman of the
board of Chatham Super Mar-
kets. He, came to the U.S. in
1913 at the age of 22 and began
his business career in Detroit in
1923, achieving a position of im-
portance and leadership in the
food industry.
Weisberg has been active in
Cong. Shaarey Zedek for many
years, and is chairman of
Shaarey Zedek's daily minyan
committee.
Mr. and Mrs. Weisberg sup-
port a wide variety of educa-
tional, philanthropic and Jew-
ish causes. The Allied Jewish
Campaign, Israel Bonds, Zion-
ist Organization of Detroit,
Bnai Brith, Hillel Day School,
Bar--Ilan University in_Israel
and Yeshiva University have
been the recipients of their con-
sistent support.
Recently, the Jewish Theo-
logical Seminary of America
has announced the creation of
the Peter and Clara Weisberg
scholarship at its rabbinical
school.
Guided by the influence of
their parents; the Weisbergs'
children, Bernard, Selma,
Harvey, Alvin and Harold, have
continued the family tradition
of Jewish loyalty, synagogue af-
filiation and communal service.

liasidic Wisdom
A skeptic approached.a fa-
mous rabbi with a plan to em-
barrass him. He hid a bird in
his hand behind his back and
then asked: "Rabbi," he said, "I
have a bird in my hand. Tell me,
is it dead or alive,"
If the rabbi answered "dead,"
he would let fly away. If the an-
swer was "alive," he intended to
snuff out its life and present
the "wise" man with a dead
bird.
The rabbi gave thought for a_
moment and answered: "My
son, the choice of life or death is
in your hands!"
Once a disciple of. Rabbi Ak-
iba became ill and no one visited
him. Rabbi Akiba, however,
entered the sick man's room,
arranged that it be swept and
cleaned; place the pillow in or-
der and the like. All this as-
sisted in the recovery of the dis-
ciple. He exclaimed: "Oh .
master, thou hast revived me."
Thete is no quality and there
is no power in man that was
created to no purpose. And even
base and corrupt qualities can
be uplifed to serve God. When,
for example, self-assurance is
uplifted, it changes into proud
assurance of the ways of God.
But to what end can the denial
of God have been created? It,
too, can be uplifted through
deeds of charity; For if someone
comes to you and asks your
help, you shall not turn him off
with pious words, saying:
"Have faith in and take your
troubles to God!" You shall act
as though there were no God, as
though there were only one per-
son in all the world who could
help this man — only yourself.
