Month Of February Specials
Editor, The Jewish News,.
The action- of the Jewish
Community Council, as re-
ported in your,Feb. 7 edition, in
opposing free secular textbooks
for non-public as well as public
school children under Public
Act 242 of the Michigan legisla-
ture, is as heartless as it is
shocking.
By its involvement in this
matter, the Community Council
is, in effect, seeking to deprive
Jewish children, many of whom
are quite needy, of vitally im-
portant state educational as-
sistance already provided for by
our Michigan government and
paid for by all taxpayers.
It is hard to understand why
the Community Council and
other Jewish organizations

Editor, The Jewish News,
You are to be commended on
the report of Archbishop Raya's
interview in the Swiss maga-
- zinc Macabbi. The archbishop's
view on the status of Jerusalem.
could serve as an example for
both the Vatican and for the
Protestants. His view that the
Christian faith is independent
of "holy places" is true to the
New Testament.
My wife and I hosted a group
of tourists to Jerusalem in 1969,
and we were impressed with
the open access of all to the sa-
cred places, each group admin-
istering their own. There is no
thread of evidence to support
the charge that Israel has in
any sense desecrated Jerusalem
as UNESCO charged.

Baking Hamantashen for Purim Beth Shalom
would seek to inject themselves
into such a complex and contro-
versial legal area in the first
place. The intent of the legisla-
ture was to aid the students, re-
gardless of what school they
happen to attend, rather than
organized religion.
I do hope that the Jewish
Community Council has plans
prepared to compensate Jewish
day school students by means
of a special appropriation if
their current actions are suc-
cessful.
