Russian Family Still Seeks Visa

Mrs. Rose Chesluk of Oak
Park has been corresponding
with the Soifer family of
Novosibirsk, USSR. One of
their recent letters described
their circumstances after the
family applied for an exit
visa:
"I work as an electrical
engineer. After I applied for
a visa to Israel in August,
1973, I was demoted. My wife
was teacher of physics for
12 years in Institute of Tech-
nology.
"Son — engineer in thermo-
dynamics. Wife and son work
now on a low-graded job."
Soifer said in his letter that
although . his . parents ..were
religious, "we are not reli-
gious, but we value Jewish
culture and try to observe
traditions."
He speaks Yiddish, but can
not write it, although the
family is now learning He-
brew and English. "For Pass-
over I try to observe the rit-
uals as remembered from
childhood with matzo and
Pasover wine."
Soifer wrote that the fam-
ily is able to hear some
world news reports on the
radio, and he corresponds
with a friend who emigrated
to Israel.

Mrs. Chesluk has been cor-
responding with the Soifer
family for nearly a year, af-
ter receiving their name and
address from the Detroit
Committee for Soviet Jewry
