Israelis Rate
Satire at Top
of TV Shows

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Is-
raeli television viewers have
enthusastically taken to a
novel form of entertainment
offered to them for the first
time—sophisticated satire.
A viewer poll showed that
the satire show, "Nikui
Rosh" ("Cleaning the Head")
has joined the ever-popular
"Hawaii Five-O" police se-
ries at the top of the ratings.
The satire show lampoons
all the political leaders, the
chief rabbinate, and even the
president who was recently
represented as naively giv-
irig away the country's atom
secrets to a group of farmers
in Gedera.
That skit caused raised
eyebrows within the broad-
casting authority, and a pro
forma apology was given,
but the public was plainly on
the side of the show's pro-
ducers who maintained that
the president was fair game
and nothing must be sacro-
sanct from good-natured rib-
bing. •
"Hawaii Five-O's" hero,
Jack Lord ("Steve McGar-
ret") was recently reported
here to be Jewish—but later
reports denied this.
The Israeli viewers remain
devoted admirers of the
tough Hawaii cop regardless:
90 percent of the two million-
plus viewers say they don't
miss a show of "Hawaii Five-
0" if they can help it.

Germans Approve
Re-Trial Treaty for
Nazi Criminals

O

BONN •(JTA) — The West
German Bundestag last week
approved the 1971 Franco-
German treaty on the re-
trial in German courts of
Nazi criminals sentenced in
absentia by French courts
after World War II.
The treaty now goes to the
gundesrat (Upper House).
No formal count was taken,
but ratification was approv-
ed with the votes of the So-
cialist Party (SDP) and Free
Democratic 'Party F D P )
against those of the Christian
Socialist Union (CSU).
The opposition parties ap-
proved of the treaty in prin-
ciple, but objected to the fact
that French prosecuting au-
thorities have up to now re-
fused to allow German courts
to examine files on the Nazi
criminals concerned.
The opposition's main ob-
jection, however, was that
the treaty applies only to
murder, but without this be-
ing stated specifically in the
treaty text. The government
argued that all war crimes,
with the exception of murder,
have now become obsolete
under the statute of limita-
tions.
Beate Klarsfeld, whose at-
tempted kidnapping of form-
er 'Paris Gestapo leader Kurt
Lischka and subsequent trial
in Cologne last summer help-
ed speed up ratification, was
refused entry to the Bundes-
tag. The speaker's office fear-
ed disturbances. She has
been banned from the Bunde-
hause.
